Gov. Kathy Hochul and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown on Friday announced the establishment of the May 14th Memorial Commission in response to the mass shooting at a Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue earlier this year. The commission will develop and advise on a plan to site and build a physical memorial in east Buffalo to memorialize the life and legacy of the residents lost that day.

As the 2022 holiday season approaches, it appears the Town of Lewiston Family Ice Rink is being put on the shelf for this year. The Town Board announced last week that, due to a number of concerns - most notably the condition of the ice rink cooling systems and related equipment, plus uncertainties with the rink's Academy Park site - it has decided to suspend the annual holiday feature for this year.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced the winners of the eighth annual 43North Finals, New York state's $5 million startup competition held in Buffalo, in which five companies were each awarded a $1 million investment. In addition to the financial investments, the five winners will relocate their companies to Buffalo and work out of the 43North incubator in the city's tallest skyscraper, Seneca One.

After a two-year hiatus, "Rock'N with HART" is back. The event, featuring Western New York's renowned Summer of '69 All-Star Band, will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Lewiston Event Center. The evening will be filled with music, raffles and a basket auction, all raising funds to benefit the Home Assistance Referral Team.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced New York state will receive $2,714,577,528 in federal formula funding for infrastructure investments in 2023. This allocation, made possible thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, represents a 22% increase over the $2.223 billion 2022 allocation, which was already 21% higher than 2021 funding levels.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced it has started mailing additional financial relief to eligible New Yorkers. The Tax Department is issuing $475 million in additional New York state child and earned income tax payments to about 1.8 million people. Most of the checks should arrive by the end of October.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, was found at two additional locations along the eastern shore of the Niagara River. The aquatic invasive was found and treated at a marina in North Tonawanda last year. This past summer, a hydrilla plant found by a boat steward during a routine inspection prompted another round of surveys along the Niagara River.

Catholic Health is expanding its hospital visiting hours. Patients may have up to two visitors at a time between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Sisters of Charity Hospital (Main Street and St. Joseph campuses). Visitation beyond normal hours continues to be permitted under certain conditions.
