Niagara Falls City School District recognizes Bloneva Bond

The Niagara Falls City School District (NFCSD) officially renamed Niagara Street School Bloneva Bond Primary at a ceremony held Tuesday afternoon in the school auditorium at 2513 Niagara St. On hand were Bond's family members, former board members she served with, current NFCSD Board of Education members, teachers and staff.

As summer draws to a close, the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) is reminding residents about ways to reduce mosquito populations in their neighborhood and how to prevent mosquito bites. The reason? West Nile virus, one of many arboviruses that can infect humans and cause serious disease, has been detected in mosquitoes collected in recent surveillance pool testing within Erie County.

Higgins calls for 'unreasonable' NEXUS backlog to be addressed

Congressman Brian Higgins is pushing to end what his team called the "unreasonably long wait time" for new NEXUS cards commonly used by Western New Yorkers crossing into Canada. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the distribution of $44.4 million in federal pandemic funding to help struggling New Yorkers with children to cover back-to-school and early life nutritional expenses. Administered by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund will provide New Yorkers on Public Assistance with one-time payments of $214 for each child ages 3 to 17, and $150 for each child younger than 3 in their household.

The Niagara County Legislature voted Tuesday to allocate up to $100,000 for the construction of a new Purple Heart monument on the grounds of the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport. The vote endorsed the recommendations of an ad hoc committee that was formed earlier this year to come up with a design and a location to honor Niagara County's Purple Heart recipients.

Hochul announces rollout of electric and gas utility bill credits for low-income families

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the vast majority of $567 million dedicated to help low-income electric and gas utility customers pay off past utility bills will be reflected on customers' August bills. The financial assistance program includes an estimated $557 million statewide COVID-19 bill credit program for low-income customers adopted by the New York State Public Service Commission.
NCDOH joins cooperative effort to wipe out terrestrial rabies
