ECMC opens state-of-the-art KeyBank Trauma and Emergency Department

On Saturday, Erie County Medical Center Corp. celebrated the opening of the institution's new $55 million KeyBank Trauma and Emergency Department, which will double the size of the existing 40-year-old facility and feature state-of-the-art technology and equipment for the region's only level one adult trauma center.

Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. (ECHDC) and Be Our Guest are encouraging visitors to the Buffalo Waterfront to engage in responsible recreation during the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis. Their recommendations incorporate guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health for reducing the spread of infectious diseases. They encourage everyone to "enjoy local recreation areas while, practicing social distancing and using common sense to protect themselves and others."
Buffalo General celebrates 200th COVID-19 patient discharged

Andrea Holloway, a 28-year-old patient care assistant at Buffalo General Medical Center, was discharged Wednesday after a nearly month-long battle with COVID-19. She was Kaleida Health's first recipient of the antiviral drug, Remdesivir, as part of a clinical trial.

As part of a "Salute to WNY," a 914th Air Refueling Wing KC-135 from the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and three F-35 fighter wings from the Vermont National Guard flew over parts of Western New York on Tuesday to salute frontline COVID-19 health care workers, essential employees and emergency responders. The planes were slated to fly over almost a dozen-and-a-half medical locations throughout the late morning.

Kaleida Health President and CEO Jody Lomeo said, "Today we received official approval from the New York State Department of Health for the waiver applications to resume limited elective surgical cases at Oishei Children's Hospital and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. We have also received confirmation that the waiver applications for the Buffalo General Medical Center and our two surgery centers are currently under review."

What would have been the 15th annual Special Olympics New York's Western Regional Basketball Tournament on the Niagara University campus was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. But that didn't mean that the student coaches and their extraordinary athletes ended their relationship. State to open 5 new drive-thru COVID-19 testing facilities, including one in Niagara County

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the state is opening five new drive-through testing facilities in Monroe, Erie, Broome, Niagara and Oneida Counties. On Saturday, the state expanded diagnostic testing criteria to include all first responders, health care workers and essential employees, even if they aren't symptomatic. These individuals will be able to get tested for COVID-19 at these new drive-thru facilities. Residents who would like to be tested at these facilities must make an appointment by calling 888-364-3065 or online at covid19screening.health.ny.gov.

Personnel from Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1, Youngstown Fire Co., Tri Community Ambulance, Ransomville Fire Co., Cambria Fire Co., Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department held an "Appreciation Parade" Saturday evening for Mount St. Mary's health care workers. Lights were flashing with cheers and sirens sounding for hospital staff as the procession moved through the main parking lot as a sign of gratitude for those keeping the community safe and healthy.

Facing an unprecedented spike in unemployment insurance applications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the New York State Department of Labor and the New York State Office of Information Technology Services today announced a "tech surge" in partnership with Google Cloud, Deloitte and Verizon to improve the reliability of the state's online and telephone-based unemployment insurance application systems. The "tech surge" will include critical upgrades to the Department of Labor's technology systems that will increase its capacity to accept and process applications, making it easier for New Yorkers to apply for benefits.

Kaleida Health on Tuesday announced it has received its most recent planned shipment of protective face masks. Purchased from Foam Depot Inc., the 1 million surgical/procedural masks (pictured), are the types the hospital system is using with its "universal masking" guidelines. They are available for staff and visitors to use in all of our sites, including in hospitals, long-term care and home care.

Six local newsrooms in New York were selected to receive almost $30,000 in funding - CNY Latino, Examiner Media, Niagara Frontier Publications, Spotlight Newspapers, Wallkill Valley Publications Inc., and Watertown Daily Times, with each of these recipients getting $5,000. In this first round, 50 local newsrooms across the U.S. and Canada are receiving $5,000 grants to help cover unexpected costs associated with covering the crisis in their communities. Additional recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.
Tops grocery stores enhance safety measures

Beginning as early as today, Tops will be rolling our additional safety measures at all of its 162 stores in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, a press release stated. Those safety measures include installing Plexiglas shields on as many of their frontend registers as possible.

The Kidney Foundation of Western New York is better able to meet the needs of local patients, thanks to a grant from the Odd Fellow & Rebekah Benefit Fund. The $10,000 grant will be used to provide nutritional supplements, transportation assistance and medical identification jewelry to kidney patients with a demonstrated financial need.

In the interest of public safety, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has severely curtailed the ways in which people can gather together. Restaurants and bars are limited to takeout and delivery; movie theaters, bowling alleys, shopping malls and hair salons are temporarily closed; events are cancelled; and nonessential businesses have to reduce workforce 100%.
