It's business as usual - whatever that means in 2020 - as Lewiston merchants prepare for an uptick in holiday shopping in coming weeks. Though coronavirus cases have spiked in Erie and Niagara counties this month, the village has only reported four new cases in the past six weeks. Safety protocols put in place when New York was "unpaused" last spring are still in place, and storeowners are working diligently to keep their sites clean and virus-free.

The Outer Harbor GPP outlines future improvements that will be made to the city's Lake Erie waterfront to build on improvements that have been recently completed by EHCDC. The development plan includes recreational facilities to improve what is currently vacant, substandard or underutilized property along a nearly one-and-a-half mile stretch of Lake Erie waterfront.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced the ribbon-cutting for the Buffalo Black Achievers Museum. The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area is set to install an extension of "The Art of Suffrage" exhibit on Nov. 2. The display will be located at Power City Eatery on Third Street in Niagara Falls. It commemorates the 19th Amendment, which secured the right of women to vote.

On Wednesday, local officials were on hand as Heart, Love & Soul food pantry cut the ribbon on the newly constructed Sr. Beth Brosmer Center. The center will house its new Daybreak program - a collaboratively designed one-stop program involving more than 30 partner agencies. The organization says the Daybreak program will increase access to services and offer additional support for people experiencing homelessness.

The Buffalo History Museum has opened a new exhibit in collaboration with Buffalo State College's Patricia H. and Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department. The exhibition, "Fifty Years of Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Art in Western New York," displays many of the museum's objects that have undergone conservation treatment. The exhibit is part of a broader community celebration for the 50th year of the conservation program.

On Wednesday, Heart, Love & Soul Executive Director Mark Baetzhold and Assistant Executive Director Pam Dixon received a donation of 4,500 pounds of nonperishable canned and dried food commodities from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Delivery assistance came from the local Niagara Falls ward and its members, and the team from Buffalo Tungsten, which has been housing and distributing the food deliveries in Western New York.

The Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo, one of the largest pure-fishing shows in the Great Lakes, is postponing its popular event at the Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls due to COVID-19. Conference Center officials are following New York state guidelines, as well as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, regarding what protocols need to be followed in an effort to keep attendees, vendors and Conference Center staff safe.

Seven years ago, Deposits for Food began collecting returnable containers and scrap metal, giving all its proceeds to three Niagara County food pantries and shelters. Since that time, the total amount donated has grown to over $82,000.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. In celebration of this historic milestone, visitors to the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport can see pieces of the display the "Art of Suffrage." Last Friday, the United Way of Greater Niagara announced the start of its 2020 fundraising campaign at the Four Points Sheridan Hotel in Niagara Falls. The organization says this year's campaign, which will run through Nov. 30, is more critical than ever as community groups continue to struggle with the effects of COVID-19.
