On Oct. 27, the New York State Department of Health released an informational document that allowed local health departments to reduce the duration of a quarantine under certain conditions. Based on that document, the Erie County Department of Health is announcing an adjustment to its COVID-19 quarantine requirements.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced the start of construction on a $13 million outdoor entertainment pavilion on Buffalo's Outer Harbor. The project, her team said, will renovate the long-abandoned Terminal B warehouse into an events center that utilizes existing parking and reclaims seven acres of contaminated property to open additional public access with scenic new lake views.

Recently, officials from the Niagara River Greenway Commission met with Town of Grand Island committee members who are working on its trails and bike routes. They took a bicycle ride down Grand Island Boulevard to finalize a direct route through town to officially connect the extensive Niagara River Shoreline Trail from Buffalo's Outer Harbor north to Youngstown.

Following last week's action by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to amend to the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the Erie County Department of Health will provide a third dose for certain people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised due to a medical condition or receipt of immunosuppressive medications or treatments.

To reduce unwanted toxicity, University at Buffalo professor Joseph Balthasar received a $1.8 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to develop a novel strategy that blocks the delivery of anticancer toxins to healthy tissue.

Effective Tuesday, the University at Buffalo will require all students, employees and visitors - regardless of their vaccination status - to wear face coverings while inside campus buildings. This includes classrooms, hallways, libraries and other common spaces, as well as UB buses and shuttles.

The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed 99 new COVID-19 cases for July 29, resulting in 496 new COVID-19 cases within the past seven days. Based on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicators for community transmission, Erie County is now considered to have "substantial" COVID-19 transmission, with a case rate of 54 new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.
