Erie County: Savage calls for passage of Child Victims Act

Erie County Legislature Chairman Peter J. Savage III was joined by Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn to announce his support for passage of the Child Victims Act. The bill would empower survivors of childhood sexual abuse to confront their abusers as adults, and provide law enforcement with the means to bring child predators to justice.

At the turn of the 20th century, motorboat clubs were a new thing. In Western New York, a motorboat club was established on what is now called Unity Island in 1903. When New York state appropriated the land to build the Black Rock lock, the club had to be moved.

On the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Congressman Brian Higgins, Town of Tonawanda Deputy Supervisor John Bargnesi, Village of Kenmore Mayor Patrick Mang, Tonawanda Councilman Dan Crangle of and other local leaders paid tribute to Howard Michael Ehrhardt, a World War II veteran from Western New York who helped to liberate Dachau (DAAK-HOW), Hitler's first and longest-run concentration camp in Germany. During a ceremony in Tonawanda Town Hall, Ehrhardt's military service medals were presented to his son, Howard Michael Ehrhardt Jr., also a U.S. Army veteran, who served during the Vietnam War.

Former Islander faces cliffs, snakes, bears in Appalachian Trail hike

Near the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail, in Maine, hikers walk through a wilderness that stretches unbroken for 100 miles. It is called the One Hundred Mile Wilderness. Jeff Bullock, 32, a Grand Island High School graduate, who hiked the entire 2,190 miles of the Appalachian Trail in six months, described the wilderness as "peaceful."
Sign of season: Santa Land brings holiday family fun to Chestnut Ridge Park

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry has announced the return of Santa Land to Chestnut Ridge Park. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and Sunday, Dec. 10. The Parks Department is partnering with the Chestnut Ridge Conservancy and the Town of Orchard Park Recreation Department again this year to present the popular weekend event, which features free family activities to brighten the holiday spirit.
