In last year's inaugural Niagara Frontier League Crossover Championship girls soccer game, the Grand Island Vikings defeated the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons, 2-0. In 2018, the two met again in the same game, with Grand Island, once again, walking away victorious, 1-0.

On Friday, Sept. 28, team members from the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar of Batavia took part in National Good Neighbor Day by volunteering at the Mercy Flight Batavia Airport, the not-for-profit provider of emergency and non-emergency air and ground medical transport and supporting services. The Applebee's staff preformed land maintenance for the airport to provide a well-kept, safe place for the EMS services to perform their duties.

Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns announced the creation of "Honoring the Fallen," the newest initiative in the Erie County Clerk's S.A.L.U.T.E.S. (Showing Appreciation, Loyalty, and Unity Towards Erie County Servicemembers) program. This initiative is designed to give discounts from local businesses to the mothers, fathers and spouses of Erie County soldiers who have been killed in action.

On Tuesday, First Niagara Foundation and KeyBank executives announced their continued support of Say Yes Buffalo with a $2 million gift to the organization's five-year, $100 million endowment campaign, which will ensure scholarship availability for eligible students forever. Including this donation, the First Niagara Foundation and KeyBank collectively have committed more than $4.1 million to the Say Yes Buffalo scholarship fund.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Rotary Club of Grand Island presented another installment of annual donations to the Miracle League of Grand Island and Western New York for upkeep of the Russell J. Salvatore Miracle League Field and neighboring playground in Veterans Park. This is one of 10 annual payments for maintenance. The GI Rotary has helped the Miracle League from its start 7 years ago.

This year the Grand Island Lions Club's Special Kids Picnic entertained many children and their chaperones to a day of fun and food, including boat rides, pony rides, face painting, music, hot dogs and hamburgers. The Lions rely on donations from the community to fund this event.
