The New York State Thruway Authority announced this week that cashless tolling customer assistance sessions will continue at the Western New York Welcome Center on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The extension is the result of what the Thruway Authority called "the success and resident feedback of the previous sessions that have been held twice a week since June."

WGRZ-TV purchased two full pages in the Buffalo Broadcasters Association program book to congratulate Jim Toellner, its president and general manager for the past 16 years, on his recent Hall of Fame induction. This summer, five teams of University at Buffalo students who didn't know each other from Adam came together in a startup boot camp to develop a medical device to solve the devastating and costly surgical complication of anastomotic leaks. Such leaks, occurring after some colorectal surgeries, are difficult to detect early. The consequences are severe: an ostomy bag, sepsis or even death.

The all-time attendance record for the Erie County Fair was shattered as the "Best 12 Days of Summer" in Western New York concluded Sunday night. Final 2019 attendance is 1,238,456. This number represents a 3.3% increase from 2018 and makes 2019's number the highest attended County Fair in the history of the Erie County Agricultural Society. The previous all-time record was achieved in 2014 (1,220,101).

The James E. Strates Shows announced that it has reached an all-time, single day gross revenue record at the Erie County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 10. This single day milestone was just one day of a record-breaking opening weekend in Hamburg, as the Strates Shows celebrates its 95th year providing the amusements at the Erie County Fair. Gross revenues for the Strates Shows midway are trending 25% over 2018 number.

Preparation for the rehabilitation of Baseline Road on Grand Island has commenced, starting with a total shoulder reconstruction to help alleviate previous drainage issues that existed on the two-and-a-half-mile stretch being repaired by Erie County this year. According to Erie County Legislator Kevin Hardwick, who represents Grand Island in the Erie County Legislature, the portion from Whitehaven to East River will require decreased speed and additional caution while the work takes place.

In a ceremony at Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial VFW Post 9249, New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs recognized lifelong Grand Island resident Daniel McMahon as a 2019 New York State Veterans' Hall of Fame inductee. McMahon, who was also honored in a statewide ceremony in Albany in May, was presented with a framed proclamation marking the honor before his fellow veterans and post members.
