UB receives $1.8 million grant to make cancer treatments less toxic

Cancer treatments are effective at destroying tumors, but they are also harmful to healthy cells. To reduce unwanted toxicity, University at Buffalo professor Joseph Balthasar received a $1.8 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to develop a novel strategy that blocks the delivery of anticancer toxins to healthy tissue.
UB to implement indoor masking requirement starting Aug. 3

Effective Tuesday, the University at Buffalo will require all students, employees and visitors - regardless of their vaccination status - to wear face coverings while inside campus buildings. This includes classrooms, hallways, libraries and other common spaces, as well as UB buses and shuttles.
With 496 new COVID-19 cases in past 7 days, Erie County experiencing 'substantial' transmission

The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed 99 new COVID-19 cases for July 29, resulting in 496 new COVID-19 cases within the past seven days. Based on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicators for community transmission, Erie County is now considered to have "substantial" COVID-19 transmission, with a case rate of 54 new cases per 100,000 people in the past seven days.

The soaking rainfall, the blustery winds, and even a tornado warning on July 17 changed Relay For Life, but the event went on as scheduled. The changes included the cancellation of the car show and the fire performance. Survivors were still offered free meals, the basket raffle attracted a crowd, the wheel of chance still spun, and people purchased tickets for the 50-50 raffle.

The Western New York Land Conservancy has purchased a 44-acre forest on Love Road on Grand Island from the Buffalo Ornithological Society. The purchase was funded by the Greenway Ecological Standing Committee and was supported by the Niagara River Greenway Commission.

In April 2020, the Albright-Knox's Public Art Initiative asked 16 local artists to respond to the initial lockdown requirements of the pandemic. To build community spirit, the museum sent artmaking materials to these artists at their home studios, and they worked to produce a 16-piece collaborative mural. The piece, now located at 43 W. Chippewa St., "speaks to individual and collective experiences of the pandemic."

Rich Trotter, Emerson Gloss and Ray Sommer Jr. all received their draft notices during the Vietnam War on the same day, Oct. 26, 1966, four months after they made history as members of the first graduating class from Grand Island High School. Before they all departed for basic training, a party was held at the Island Lanes, and they all received good wishes from everyone.

When Shirley Luther and her husband, LaVerne "Bunny," the Town of Grand Island supervisor at the time, and their three girls attended services at Trinity United Methodist Church on Mother's Day 1970, they offered prayers for their 21-year-old son and brother, US. Army Pfc. Robert B. Luther, who had been sent to Vietnam five months earlier.

Barring a monumental miracle by June 1, the Toronto Blue Jays will again call downtown Buffalo's Sahlen Field home. The Canadian government has yet to grant them approval to return to the Rogers Centre. With COVID-19 cases on the rise in Canada, and Ontario recently entering another lockdown, it is unlikely the Jays will return to the field they last called home in 2019 anytime soon.
