In basketball terms, when Niagara-Wheatfield and Grand Island stepped onto the hardwood inside N-WHS Tuesday night, the teams were battling to improve their record in the Niagara Frontier League and gain points for the sectional playoffs. As important as a win was, though, Tuesday night was a lot more than basketball.
The Falcons and Vikings joined in the 2019 Hoops for Hope game, which was played in honor of a friend close to each school's heart - Julie Neville.

There's only a few days left in 2018, but looking back ... what a year it has been for Niagara-Wheatfield athletics. 2018 saw a majority of Falcons sports teams accomplish winning records, some of which included Niagara Frontier League and Section VI championships. Some teams and individuals were even fortunate enough to reach the state finals.

Saturday night, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons boys hockey team got revenge on its rival Williamsville North, 3-1. The victory comes just eight days after the Spartans defeated the Falcons, 5-3, at the Northtown Center.

On Tuesday night, the Falcons used every second to close out its first NFL win versus Kenmore West. N-W defeated the Blue Devils, 61-59, after being down by 7 points at halftime.

The Wolverines faced the defending New York State Class AA champions Liverpool High School. After a slow start in the first quarter, the Wolverines never looked back and throttled the defending champs, 71-42, at Onondaga Community College.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Lady Falcons have had success all season. From unbeaten in the regular season to Niagara Frontier League champions to Section VI champions - nothing could go wrong for the team.
On Sunday, at the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, the girls looked to add to their season resume: New York state champions. With all good things, though, they come to an end.
The Lady Falcons' historic season struck midnight Sunday, as the team was defeated 3-2 by Wantagh.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons girls volleyball team etched another first into its season Saturday. The Niagara Frontier League and Section VI Class A champions will play for their first state title Sunday, after finishing second place in pool play of the New York State Class A girls volleyball championships.

The fall athletics season has been one to remember for the Niagara-Wheatfield girls volleyball team. The team won its first Section VI title and followed it with a win in the Far West Regional to clinch the first state tournament appearance in program history.
On Friday morning, the team was scheduled to hit the road for states in Glens Falls. Prior to them loading up the bus and taking off, though, the team was given an outstanding send off from their fellow classmates.

Last Saturday, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons girls volleyball team notched the program's first-ever Section VI title. On Friday night, at Webster-Thomas High School, the girls etched another first into its history.
The Falcons defeated the Irondequoit Eagles, 3-1, in the Far West Regional crossover matchup. The victory sends the girls to the New York State Tournament in Glens Falls.

It's been a crazy year for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team. From wins, losses, tiebreakers and a death close to the team, the team has seen a mixture of everything. On Thursday night, the team ended it's fall campaign with a fulfilling sense of closure.
The Falcons defeated Williamsville East in the Class A Chuck Funke Bowl finals, 22-8.

On a rainy and dreary day at Niagara-Wheatfield's Terry Harvey Field, the Falcons supplied one of the most thrilling comeback victories in some years, as Niagara-Wheatfield defeated Williamsville South, 34-33, in the semifinals of the Class A Chuck Funke Bowl.

It was Niagara-Wheatfield's senior day at Terry Harvey Field Saturday afternoon. The celebrations did not finish how the Falcons would've liked, though, as the team dropped its final regular season game of the year versus Grand Island, 14-0.

It's been almost four years since Niagara-Wheatfield's golf team had a number other than zero in its loss column. On Tuesday, that number stayed put at zero, as the team won the Niagara Frontier League Tournament at Willowbrook Golf Course with a combined low score of 407.

It's been a good two years for the Niagara-Wheatfield girls tennis team. In 2017, the team won its first Niagara Frontier League title since 2012. In 2018, the girls are back on top of the league - clinching their fourth NFL title in program history. It's also the first time in program history that the team has won the title in back-to-back years.

Friday night was something players on coach Russ Nixon's Falcons squad won't forget for a long time. In front of a packed crowd at Terry Harvey Field, including a loud and proud Black Hole student section, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons defeated Kenmore West for a homecoming victory, 28-21.

The teams have reached homecoming week, which includes themed days, the always competitive pindodge game, powder puff football and, of course, the Friday night lights football game. After playing its very first Friday night home game under the lights last year versus Williamsville North, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons will once again suit up for homecoming at 7 p.m. on Friday versus Kenmore West.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons girls soccer team is special, with the ability to score at a steady pace, but keep opposing teams off the board as well.
The team is coming off a stellar 14-2 regular season last year, but they were ousted in the semifinals of the Section VI Class AA tournament.

Niagara-Wheatfield girls tennis coach Kristin Janese always says year in and year out, "I want to improve off of last season's record." This year, that's tough to do, because her squad last season went 14-0. Nevertheless, she hopes for much of the same in 2018.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons girls soccer team make it very difficult for teams to score. The team has given up just two goals in eight games, and on Tuesday, nothing was different versus Lewiston-Porter.
The Falcons defeated the Lancers, 3-0, in Niagara Frontier League play behind two goals from Briana Zayatz and one from Erin Weir. The shutout was also the Falcons' sixth of the season.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team's defense struggled to slow teams down. In 2018, the Falcons haven't given up a point.
The Falcons defeated the Frontier Falcons, 19-0, Saturday, on a cool and breezy day at Terry Harvey Field.

Opening day for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team was different this year. Before the game, players and coaches gathered around a painted "42" on the field and said a prayer together. The audience also gave the man who donned that 42 a moment of silence. The man who donned 42 was Mike Ziegler, who tragically passed away last winter. To honor their fallen teammate, the Falcons played just like "Ziggy" would have - hard, energetic, passionate and with heart.

Last season, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons faced one of the most difficult schedules in Class AA of Section VI, going against state title runner up Lancaster on the road, and sectional runner up Williamsville North at home. This year, the Falcons were classed as A1, and coach Russ Nixon hoped the team could improve off of last season.

Phew. What a year it's been. Five teams won Niagara Frontier League championships, some teams and athletes reached the state finals; nevertheless, Falcons athletics gave this writer a lot to report on this year. Without further ado, here is the first ever Falcons Flashback Awards for the 2017-18 school year. The Falcons Flashback Awards will pick a most valuable player from each team during the past year, as well as a Best Team Award.

On Tuesday evening, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons strolled into Williamsville East High School with one thing on their mind: winning a Class AA Section VI title. Unfortunately, the Falcons were halted by No. 5 Lancaster, as the Legends defeated N-W, 7-5.

It's been about seven years since Niagara-Wheatfield softball coach Jim Proefrock could say his team was heading to the big game. Proefrock breathed a sigh of relief Thursday night, as the Falcons defeated the Williamsville North Spartans, 8-4, in the Section VI Class AA semifinals.

On Monday morning at River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island, the best high school golfers from Section VI arrived to punch their ticket to the New York state high school golf tournament at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell from June 2-4.

On Friday evening, the Niagara Falls Wolverines and Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons sent their ace pitchers out to the mound for a big Niagara Frontier League game at the Niagara Falls turf facility.
With two aces on the mound, majority of the crowd thought it would be a pitchers duel.
That was not the case, Friday.
The Falcons used 21 hits to defeat the Wolverines, 22-11, in a game where the score was not indicative of the gameplay throughout.

Coach Jim Proefrock calls his Niagara-Wheatfield softball team a "bunch of gamers." Versus Grand Island, the gamers fought back.
After blowing a 4-0 lead, the Falcons rallied back to defeat the Vikings, 11-6.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons softball team has had a knack for producing a quality team out of the Niagara Frontier League. With five Section VI titles and eight Niagara Frontier League crowns under their belt dating back to 1976 and 1982, respectively, the 2018 Falcons could use their experienced roster to ring in No. 6 and No. 9.
