New York Power Authority fishing pier at Robert Moses dam to close temporarily Aug. 16

The fishing pier at the base of the New York Power Authority's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant will be closed for maintenance work on Monday, Aug. 16. It will reopen Tuesday, Aug. 17.
'Big R': Mat Williamson and Derek Wagner Win Sid & Carol Jeffery Memorial at Ransomville

"Money" Mat Williamson from St. Catharines, Ontario, and Middleport's Derek Wagner won the Sid and Carol Jeffery Memorial events for the Krown Undercoating Modifieds and Investor's Service Sportsman respectively Friday night at the Ransomville Speedway. For Williamson, it was his third victory of the season at "The Big R." For Wagner, it was his second triumph of the season.
Roller Rink at Canalside opening Aug. 20

Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. (ECHDC) and Buffalo Waterfront Management Group (BWMG) announced the canals at Canalside will be converted into a giant roller rink that will open Aug. 20 and roll through the fall season to Oct. 31.

"Super" Matt Sheppard from Waterloo won the 36th running of the Summer Nationals for the Big-Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series at Ransomville Speedway on Tuesday night. For the fourth time at the "Big R" in 2021, Newfane's Scott Kerwin was victorious, this time in the inaugural Mike Bonesky Memorial for the Investor's Service Sportsman in round one of the Western Region for the Sportsman Super DIRTcar Series.

The Division of Consumer Protection and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) are alerting New Yorkers of all ages of the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike. A new CDC report revealed bicycle-related deaths nationally increased between 2009 and 2018, primarily among adults. Males were three times more likely than females to end up in the hospital with traumatic brain injuries.
Mackenzie Kulesza Memorial to open Ransomville Speedway's 63rd season

With the rainout this past Friday night, Ransomville Speedway will try again and open the gates for the first time in 2021 on Friday, May 14, with the running of the Mackenzie Kulesza Memorial for the Sunflowers of Sanborn Mini Stocks. The 36-lap event is in honor of Mackenzie Kulesza, the 11-year-old who died tragically following a car accident in November 2020.

The officers of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association voted to delay the official start date of the fall 2020 sports season, cancel the fall 2020 regional and state championships, and prepare to implement a condensed season schedule in January 2021 if high school sports remain prohibited throughout 2020 due to COVID-19. This decision comes at the recommendation of the NYSPHSAA COVID-19 task force when it convened as a working group for the third time Thursday morning.

Over the last two seasons, the Lewiston-Porter Lancers boys basketball team have accomplished great feats going a combined 33-12 and won the Niagara Frontier League and Section VI Class A titles. Accomplishments and accolades take hard work, talent and success to achieve. While the Lancers feature star sophomore Roddy Gayle, there's another player wearing the Kelly green and white who has been a huge piece to the L-P squad ... and he's just a freshman. Jalen Duff has taken the role of point guard for the last two seasons under coach Matt Bradshaw's squad and, in just two years, the two-year varsity guard has stood out for the Lancers.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons 2018-19 boys basketball season was (in a way) like the amusement park thriller. There were ups, downs, turns and bumps, but the main emotion of that roller coaster - it was a thrilling time.
Lew-Port hoops ready for success again in 2019-20

The Lewiston-Porter Lancers 2018-19 basketball season could be summed up in one word - historic. The squad went 21-4, won the Niagara Frontier League title, a feat that hadn't been accomplished in 34 years; were victorious in the Section VI Class A championship and made an appearance in the Far West Regional before the season came to a close. All in all, it was the program's best season in 41 years.
Niagara Falls hoops ready to continue winning tradition

2018-19 was one of the best seasons in the long history of Niagara Falls High School basketball. The team finished 21-4, won its fourth straight Section VI Class AA title and reached the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Final Four for the first time in 10 years.

Wednesday afternoon (and into the evening), the No. 1 seeded Niagara-Wheatfield boys soccer team did just that, as the Falcons finally pushed past No. 8 McKinley, 2-1, after two rounds of penalty kicks to advance to the Section VI Class A1 semifinals.

It was a night of upsets at Gene Masters Field on the Grand Island High School campus Wednesday night. In the first Niagara Frontier League boys soccer title matchup, Lewiston-Porter defeated Niagara-Wheatfield. For the girls title, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks kept the upset specials alive, as they defeated the Grand Island Vikings, 2-1, to win the NFL crown.

Peltier's no hitter guides Falcons to strong regular season finish

After heavy rains suspended the contest in the first inning last Wednesday, the two teams continued the battle on Saturday, with N-W coming out as the victors, 9-0.  Despite a stellar offensive showing from the Falcons, it was all about Tommy Peltier on the mound. The senior hurled a no hitter while striking out 13 Lions.
