Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday signed legislation (S.5151A/A.65277A) that prohibits schools and school districts from filing any type of lawsuit against parents or guardians for unpaid meal fees. The new law builds on measures from the governor's comprehensive "No Student Goes Hungry" program and helps protect students and families from legal tactics related to their inability to make payments for school meals.

Congratulations to the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston scholarship winners Charles Dieteman, Jessi Avila-Shah and Amaris Huang. The Lewiston Kiwanis Club awarded Dieteman with a scholarship of $1,000. In addition, scholarships of $500 were awarded to Avila-Shah and Huang. The William and Joanne Roth Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was awarded to Isabella Guerrucci. Guided by its strategic plan to provide excellence in all phases of the student living-learning experience, Niagara University will break ground next month on an $11.5 million upgrade to the Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin in July, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Funding for the project includes a $1 million grant from the NYS Higher Education Capital Matching program (HECap), as well as other private donations and university investments.

University at Buffalo scientists who are doing genomic sequencing of COVID-19 samples report the delta variant of the coronavirus has been detected in Erie County. First identified in India and now responsible for a significant outbreak in the United Kingdom, the delta variant is believed to be as much as 200%, or twice as transmissible, as the original coronavirus strain.

The Castellani Art Museum is reopening to the public with five new exhibits and a completely revamped gallery. The museum on the Niagara University campus was closed to visitors more than a year ago due to COVID-19, and NU used the gallery as a distance classroom.

New York SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) is issuing a statewide call to action to combat the deadliest season for young people - the summer months. Known as the "100 Deadliest Days," the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is the time when young people lose their lives most frequently in car crashes, as well as other destructive decisions. SADD is calling upon teens, caring adults, law enforcement, and the community at large to raise awareness and take action to help keep our young drivers safe.

Wilson Middle School eighth grader Rayn Cooper recently presented two checks totaling $8,000 to the Dale Shank Fundraiser at the 3F Club in Lewiston. The checks marked the successful completion of a wristband sales fundraiser Cooper held in the Niagara County community in honor of Shank - her role model - a Vietnam veteran and youth hunting mentor at the 3F who is battling cancer.

The "100 Deadliest Days" is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Nationwide, more than 7,038 people died in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days" over a 10-year period from 2010-19. That's more than seven people a day each summer.

Niagara County will officially open its county parks for the season on Saturday, May 29. The county operates five sites: Burmaster, Krull, Oppenheim, Royalton and West Canal. Widespread vaccine distribution in the United States has been among the country's most successful public health programs, according to David Herzberg, a professor of history in the University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences. And though these programs have nearly wiped out many viruses responsible for causing virulent diseases, Herzberg says vaccine concerns and hesitancy, especially as they relate to COVID-19, are not new. They have been around as long as there have been vaccines.

The Buffalo Zoo's two African lion cubs - born to Lusaka and Tiberius on March 7 - finally have names. Members of the Buffalo Zoo community selected Khari for the boy and Zahra for the girl via an online poll. Both cubs and mother Lusaka were set to make their public debut Thursday.
