HS Hockey: Niagara-Wheatfield cruises past Lockport

Niagara-Wheatfield is known for being one of the best hockey teams in Western New York. On Saturday at the Northtown Center, Division 3 Lockport saw just how talented the Falcons are. The Falcons defeated the Lions, 15-0, in the first round of the Section VI large schools playoffs .

Niagara-Wheatfield High School hosted the Niagara Frontier League basketball championships Thursday night. The games featured the Niagara and Frontier division winners going head-to-head to determine a true champion of the league.

Wednesday night, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks faced the Grand Island Vikings in the Niagara Frontier League's third place crossover game. The Lumberjacks got off to a hot start, but the Vikings continued to push their way back, falling just short. North Tonawanda defeated Grand Island, 59-53, in front of a loud Vikings crowd.

Niagara-Wheatfield coach Erik O'Bryan will admit, his team has been close in almost every game, but a big run by the opposing team seems to always haunt the Falcons at the end. That's exactly what happened Monday night, as the Falcons dropped a non-league contest versus Maryvale, 65-49.

Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof will tell anyone his team's ability to shoot the 3-pointer is critical. Wednesday night versus Niagara-Wheatfield, they only made six, a little below their season average, but all six came at key times to spark a Vikings win. The Vikings defeated the Falcons 51-30 Wednesday night for their second win in a row.
Rocking, pin-dropping to benefit Lew-Port students

A fundraiser to benefit the Lewiston-Porter High School Summer of '69 Music Scholarship will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Lewiston Event Center, 845 Cayuga St. The event will feature a performance by the Summer of '69 All-Star Band with special performances by Lewiston-Porter High School students.

Niagara-Wheatfield and St. Joes played the most hyped up hockey game scheduled for Wednesday night, as the No. 6 ranked team in the state faced the No. 9 ranked team in the state, respectively. After 50 minutes of play, though, there was no winner and no loser. The Falcons and Marauders tied, 1-1, Wednesday night at the Hockey Outlet. N-W and St. Joes came in as the second and third place teams in Division, respectively.

In basketball they say you live and die by the 3-pointer. Niagara-Wheatfield's girls basketball team didn't necessarily live or die by it Monday night versus Kenmore East, but when they made them, they were in big spots. The Falcons defeated the Kenmore East Bulldogs, 60-50, Monday night at Niagara-Wheatfield. It was the first time the two teams met all season.
HS Hoops: Niagara Falls pulls away late from Aquinas

It's rare for an eighth-grader to play on a varsity team, let alone start. The Niagara Falls Wolverines are in rare company, as they start two eighth-graders. Saturday afternoon at Aquinas, eighth-grader Willie Lightfoot was a key in sealing the Wolverines victory. The Falls defeated the Lil' Irish in their third road game in as many days, 68-55.
Lewiston dancers collect for Heart, Love & Soul

Students and teachers from the Lewiston Dance Center recently took part in a food drive for the Heart, Love & Soul Community Kitchen. Studio owners Rachel Novelli and Kathy Abbondanza decided to try boosting donations by getting the dance instructors involved. The result was a dance contest between the instructors. The class with the most donations would win a $50 gift card.

Niagara-Wheatfield golf to represent NFL in first Section VI team championship

On Thursday, Section VI boys golf Chairman Nate Leary announced that the section would hold its first annual Section VI boys golf team championship. The team aspect will be held alongside the annual individual championship and state qualifier. So, the tournament will not only crown an individual Section VI Champion and eight state tournament qualifiers, but also a Section VI team champion, something that hasn't been awarded in "many decades."
Niagara-Wheatfield basketball team to host 'Pink-out' night

As a teacher and a coach at Niagara-Wheatfield, coach Steve Miller has a lot that he has to take care of. Miller also has a family, which he cares for dearly. This summer, though, he was dealt a tough blow. Miller's wife, Krista, was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer for the second time and he's been at the forefront taking care of his family. Along with that, he continues to help coach the Niagara-Wheatfield boys basketball team, which his son Cam Miller also plays for. The team has been nothing but supportive for the family, knowing what their coach and teammate is going through.
UB addiction specialist Clara Bradizza appointed to NIH study section

Local students finalists in national STEM program; Niagara Falls students earn honorable mention

An original experiment proposal developed by a team of students from Lockport High School was among the finalists in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP), Mission 12 to the International Space Station. SSEP is a national STEM education initiative of the National Center for Earth and Space Education (NCESSE). The local program was organized by the WNY STEM Hub.

Enrollment is now open for 2018 Artpark Theatre Academy and Art Camp sessions. Artpark Theatre Academy is set to take place July 9-Aug. 5, 2018 (ages 10-18); four weeklong sessions of Art Camp will begin July 9 (ages 9-14).

On Wednesday night, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons displayed superb defense versus Clarence throughout the course of the game. They needed the effort for all 45 minutes of play, and they got it. The Falcons defeated Clarence 2-1 in Section VI Division 1 action.
HS Basketball: Falcons fight back to win second straight

Playing two games in as many nights demands a lot out of basketball players from high school to pros. On Tuesday night, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons played their second of three games in a row. Fatigue was shown early, but as the game went along, the Falcons seemed to gain energy and pull through for their second straight win. The Falcons defeated the Starpoint Spartans on the road, 48-41, behind a huge comeback run in the third quarter.

Niagara Falls HS basketball looking to stay dominant

In Western New York, dominant high school basketball programs have come and gone throughout the years, but one that has remained consistently dominant is Niagara Falls High School.  The Wolverines are coming off their second straight Section VI Class AA title and 15th sectional title appearance in the last 17 years. With 19 sectional titles in program history, coach Sal Constantino and his team have their expectations set to work for No. 20 this year. 
Niagara University MBA students take on China: Global Trade Mission 2017

Glazed gift: West Street Elementary donates to hurricane victims

On Oct. 19, the school held a doughnut sale and donated all proceeds from the fundraiser to hurricane victims. In all, the school sold all 408 doughnuts in 30 minutes, and, including donations, raised $450.
HS Football: Parks shines in Falcons' win over Frontier

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons might not be in the playoffs this year as they'd hoped, but they were in action on Saturday, in an extra regular season matchup versus Frontier High School. The Falcons came out on top, 41-26, in the last home game of 2017.

In 13 seasons as head coach of the Niagara-Wheatfield girls volleyball team, Brandi Cochran hoped that one day her team would raise a Niagara Frontier League title. The dream became reality on Friday night, as the Falcons' defeated Grand Island, 3-0, in the NFL Championship game.

After coming a tough loss for a league championship, any team could've hung their head and lost confidence. Niagara-Wheatfield girls soccer did the complete opposite on Friday evening. The No. 2 seeded Falcons defeated the No. 7 seed Lockport Lions, 4-1, in the Section VI Class AA quarterfinals.
