Five new distinguished student scholarship recipients will be showcased at the annual NCCC Foundation Scholarship Gala Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.
This award is the most prestigious scholarship offered by the NCCC Foundation to incoming freshman.

Heart of Niagara rescues Sadie and Sally, beagle sisters, have brought a whole new meaning to the phrase "pay it forward." They recently returned home to Western New York from a 2,400-mile four-day journey, where they visited the very place from where they were rescued last year, to help bring more of their furry friends home to the safety of this area.

Joe Azbell retired as assistant director from Niagara Cerebral Palsy in 1999. But for the past two summers, he and his wife, Carol, have spent a couple of hours each week on their hands and knees pulling weeds in the agency's Children's Memorial Garden at 9812 Lockport Road.

Village of Lewiston Mayor Terry Collesano's Frontier House citizens committee met this week and is working on a plan to save the historic Center Street building.
He called the private meeting "informative," and said, "I think we're making some progress."

The Lewiston Kiwanis Club presented Artpark's seventh annual Free Family Movie Night Monday. Disney's "Frozen" was presented to hundreds of families at the outdoor amphitheater. "Frozen" movie friends Olaf, Elsa and Anna were on hand to greet the children. The Peach Queen contestants also made a special appearance at the event.

Two Niagara University faculty members were recognized for the outstanding quality of their teaching. Ed Hutton, assistant professor of finance, was presented with the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award, while Stefanie Wichhart, Ph.D., associate professor history, received the Innovation in Teaching Award.

After the flag-raising ceremony, the signs that will be placed at the Niagara Falls Boulevard and Lockport Road ends of Walmore Road naming that section of the road the Spec. Alan N. Dikcis Memorial Highway were unveiled.

The Empire State Development board of directors met Wednesday in New York City and approved $20.4 million in funding for 30 projects that are spurring economic growth and opportunity in all 10 regions of New York. The projects will directly create 30 new jobs and enable the creation of hundreds more while also retaining more than 2,200 existing jobs.
These targeted investments will leverage more than $41.3 million in private and other public funding to support business expansions and regional tourism efforts, and projects designed to build a strong foundation for future economic growth and job creation.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced the recipients of $340 million in full-day pre-kindergarten funding for 81 school districts and community-based organizations statewide, opening full-day classroom slots to nearly 37,000 children.
The funding, included in the 2014-15 state budget, is the first installment as part of the state's commitment to invest $1.5 billion over five years to build a statewide universal full-day pre-kindergarten program.
Assemblyman John Ceretto announced the Niagara Falls City School District is receiving a $289,131 grant to fund pre-kindergarten. This grant comes in addition to the millions in pre-k funding Ceretto helped secure during budget negotiations this year.

Patrons driving to Artpark Tuesday for the Styx concert may have noticed more cars parked off South Fourth Street. Vehicles were on residential lawns - parked both parallel and perpendicular - on the road and in driveways. Some homes had more than a half-dozen parked on site.
If this appeared in contrast to previous Village of Lewiston Board rulings, it was - and it wasn't.

The National Hockey League and the Buffalo Sabres announced the NHL Combine will move to Buffalo in 2015 and 2016, with the event being held at First Niagara Center and the soon-to-be-completed HARBORCENTER complex across from the arena.
