On Friday morning, the Lewiston Police Department led a joint active shooter drill on the Lewiston-Porter campus. The LPD teamed with Niagara County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol and New York State Police, in conjunction with local fire and EMS companies. Access to the schools was restricted during the duration of the event.

On the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Congressman Brian Higgins, Town of Tonawanda Deputy Supervisor John Bargnesi, Village of Kenmore Mayor Patrick Mang, Tonawanda Councilman Dan Crangle of and other local leaders paid tribute to Howard Michael Ehrhardt, a World War II veteran from Western New York who helped to liberate Dachau (DAAK-HOW), Hitler's first and longest-run concentration camp in Germany. During a ceremony in Tonawanda Town Hall, Ehrhardt's military service medals were presented to his son, Howard Michael Ehrhardt Jr., also a U.S. Army veteran, who served during the Vietnam War.

Tonawanda Girl Scout Troop 34253 made care packs for the homeless as part of the "Responsible for What I Say and Do" Daisy Petal. Daisy Petals are similar to badges for older Girl Scouts. The care packs will be delivered to Buffalo City Mission.

Year in and year out, the best amateur golfers from around the world storm into Lewiston around the middle of July to play in the Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club. 2018 will be the 60th anniversary of the tournament. A press event Thursday evening announced the stakes will be even higher this year.

It has been a whirlwind week for 27th Congressional District candidate and Grand Island Supervisor Nate McMurray. On Sunday, he announced his candidacy to a standing-room-only crowd of over 200 at the Brickyard Brewing Company in Lewiston. Voters throughout the district came to support McMurray's effort to unseat incumbent Congressman Chris Collins.

This past summer, former Town of Wheatfield Supervisor Bob Cliffe announced he wouldn't be running for re-election. This decision opened up a seat as the town's supervisor. As with any government job, the supervisor's job is difficult and can be strenuous. People wondered who would step into Cliffe's spot. In comes Don MacSwan.

The Neptune Water Ski Club held their annual New Year's Day event in the Niagara River at Lewiston. They had to break ice out of the boat launch to get the ski boat in the water, and then had to ski around the ice flows in the river.
