Both local veterans and officials participated Friday in a groundbreaking ceremony for the "Circle of Honor," the new Lewiston veterans memorial at Academy Park.

Earth, Wind & Fire (Tuesday) will kick-off a string of marquee performances at the Lewiston venue. The upcoming schedule includes The Flaming Lips (July 27), JoJo Siwa (July 28), Chris Isaak (July 30), Rick Springfield (Aug. 13), Paul Rodgers and Bad Company (Aug. 20), and Foreigner (Aug. 27).

Drop down the final credits, that's (unfortunately) a wrap.  Recently, the Tribune was informed that Four Seasons Cinema, located off Military Road and 4th Avenue, will be closing within the next month, around the first week of August or sooner.

A smaller but peppier Artpark crowd was treated to the most fun concert of the 2019 "Tuesdays in the Park" concert series this week. Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra and Emerson Hart of Tonic had people on their feet, singing and dancing along to some of the 1990's biggest hits.

Though rains threatened to spoil the party, Artpark & Company's "Free Family Saturdays" kicked off in fine fashion over the weekend. In fact, children and parents dodged some drops and came out early to make slime, a colorful mask or play with an assortment of toys atop a sandy hill.

When Niagara County Community College was created in 1962, the original campus was located in downtown Niagara Falls at the former Nabisco Shredded Wheat plant. It was a big night of music Tuesday at Artpark, as the Lewiston venue presented a bill with Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy, John Lodge of The Moody Blues with guest vocalist Arthur Brown, Asia and YES. The "Royal Affair Tour" offered fast-paced set changes, but laid-back rock music, which led to a larger audience pop than in past weeks.

Artpark & Company's first Strawberry Moon Festival served as a means to educate the community on the Tuscarora and Cayuga nations through Native American singing, dancing, crafts, fare and even a parade. Culture and customs were defined, explained and then presented to hundreds of onlookers - onlookers who were invited to become participants.

The Discover Niagara Shuttle kicked off its fourth season last month, connecting riders to 17 destination sites along a 14-mile route from Niagara Falls to Fort Niagara. Overseen by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA), the free hop-on, hop-off service has serviced over 105,000 riders from across the globe since its inception in 2016.

Buffalo State students digging up history at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown

Anthropology students from SUNY Buffalo State College are spending time at Old Fort Niagara this month. They are participating in an archaeological field school that is actively excavating Building 428, a barracks spanning the years 1756-1813 near the North Redoubt. Built by the French in 1756, it disappears from maps and plans in 1814 without records of why or how. The barracks housed soldiers while they were garrisoned at the fort.
Niagara County holds flag-raising ceremony to honor veterans

In honor of National Flag Day, Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski presented a flag-raising ceremony on Friday, unveiling three new flagpoles in which U.S. military veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East raised the American, state and county flags in front of the county courthouse.

Cuomo on Monday hosted the first meeting of community leaders and the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI) Commission, where he announced up to $300 million in funding available for communities impacted by Lake Ontario flooding. Local governments will match 15% for every dollar the state spends.

Artpark & Company's annual "Fairy House Festival" offered a flurry of activities designed for all age groups. In fact, in each corner of the lower park area - where the event returned this year - one could find some new activity or sight. Throughout the afternoon, children and families dressed up, made fairy houses, concocted potions, visited the tea house, listened to music - made music in the interactive instrument garden - danced with costumed characters, picnicked and played games.

Before his concert at Artpark on Tuesday, June 4, musician Sammy Hagar presented a check of $2,500 to Heart, Love & Soul and Community Missions Inc. in support of their food services for the less-fortunate. The donation was made by the Hagar Family Foundation, as it is done at every stop Hagar makes on his current Sammy Hagar and The Circle Tour.

Local leaders gathered Tuesday to kick-off a new season for the Discover Niagara Shuttle. The free, hop-on/hop-off shuttle service first launched in 2016. Today, it takes passengers to 17 destinations along a 14-mile route, which stretches from Niagara Falls to Old Fort Niagara.
