The big man in the red suit arrived in Lewiston via Rainbow Air helicopter on Saturday morning. After successfully landing in Academy Park, Santa met with children and families before boarding his special Deal Realty Float. J&J Strassburg Trucking transported the holly-jolly one to the International Peace Garden, where he greeted even more youth.

Old Fort Niagara brims with holiday merriment, festive songs, creative crafts and booming celebrations at the annual "Castle by Candlelight," happening from 6:30-8:15 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 8 and 15. This annual fundraiser allows visitors to step back in time and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the Christmas season within the candlelit-setting of the 18th century fort.

In the spirit of "Giving Tuesday," the Food Bank of WNY announced the expansion of its direct delivery program and unveiled its new 26-foot refrigerated truck today in order to better serve its 41 Niagara County member agencies - and distribute more food to people in need throughout the community. With the launch of direct delivery in Niagara County, the Food Bank will now provide direct delivery services to all of its 317 agencies throughout its four-county service area.

Excitement is growing for an all-inclusive play area unlike anything else in Lewiston. Village officials met recently to review a near-final set of designs for Mason's Mission Playground at Marilyn Toohey Park. When completed - hopefully by next summer - the playground is expected to be almost 14,000 square feet.

Starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, the public is invited to view the life-sized gingerbread village created by baking and pastry arts students and chefs of the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

Village of Lewiston Mayor Anne Welch on Monday unveiled a conceptual plan to revitalize Academy Park. Proposed improvements would allow the municipality's most prominent green space to be used year-round.As a result, the Niagara County Peach Festival would need a new home. Welch and the Board of Trustees discussed this with members of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, who run the annual event.

The New York State Department of Transportation and the New York Power Authority on Friday announced a major milestone in the project to remove an underutilized two-mile stretch of the former Robert Moses Parkway (now called the Niagara Scenic Parkway) along the Niagara Gorge in Niagara Falls, to create a park-like setting that will give residents and visitors alike unimpeded access to the gorge and provide added recreational opportunities.

Every year, volunteers from the Historical Association of Lewiston meet to wash and put a coat of wax on Lewiston's two large-scale bronze monuments. Last Sunday's weather was perfect and the crew met at the Freedom Crossing and Tuscarora Heroes monuments to perform their magic.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the International Institute of Buffalo (IIB) has been awarded two federal grants through the Justice Office for Victims of Crime (OVW). The two grants, in the amounts of $700,000 and $750,000 for a total of $1.45 million, will help the Institute continue to provide specialized services for victims of human trafficking.

The New York Power Authority announced that it is nearing the three-quarters mark in a $460 million infrastructure improvement project at its Lewiston Pump Generating Plant. The multiyear program allows NYPA to continue to provide low-cost power and power proceeds to businesses in Western New York and statewide tied to thousands of jobs and billions in capital investments that have positively impacted the state economy. The midpoint of the upgrades was announced by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in March 2017.

The rebirth of Lackawanna's Bethlehem Steel site continues to gain momentum with the opening of the newest section of the Shoreline Trail on the site, an approximately 6,500-foot-long, 10-foot-wide stretch that runs from the City of Buffalo line to Dona Street in Lackawanna.

Community Collaboration was the strength of the Niagara-Wheatfield eco-campus revitalization project at the Niagara-Wheatfield schools. More than 75 students and adults worked side-by-side on a crisp, rainy Saturday morning in October. For some, it was their first experience not only using a rake, a shovel and a wheelbarrow, but planting flowers and trees and spreading mulch. It was certainly a new challenge.

The Erie County Department of Social Services is celebrating the move of HEAP and Emergency Services Offices to 460 Main St., Buffalo, after years of overcrowding and other building issues at the old HEAP Office, located at 478 Main St. More than 90,000 Erie County households seek help annually with heating their homes and with other emergency needs such as shelter and utility arrears, evictions, security agreements, moving and storage assistance, all of which will now be coordinated through the offices at 460 Main.

In spring of 2011, University at Buffalo hydrogeologist Chris Lowry hammered a giant measuring staff into the bottom of a pond in Western New York. Nearby, he posted instructions explaining how passersby could read the staff and text him the water level.
