Gov. Kathy Hochul updated New Yorkers on the CDC's approval last night of an updated COVID-19 vaccine, and urged New Yorkers to get the shot once it is available later this week. The 2023-24 vaccine, previously authorized by the federal Food and Drug Administration, is expected to be available at pharmacies and physicians' offices, as well as other health care providers, throughout New York in the coming days.

The 65th annual Niagara County Peach Festival closed Sunday night with the naming of Kirsten Ferree as Peach Queen. A 20-year-old North Tonawanda native and Buffalo State University senior, Ferree receives both a crown and a $4,000 scholarship courtesy of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced new steps the state of New York is taking to protect individuals from COVID-19 following reports of a new variant, BA.2.86. These steps come after COVID-19 hospitalizations in New York increased as the summer progressed. As a reminder, an updated COVID-19 vaccine tailored to guard against certain variants is expected to arrive in pharmacies and doctor's offices this fall.

They call it the "most entertaining two hours in Lewiston," and this year will feature the first time two former champion teams will face off in a battle of wits, skill and speed at "Lewiston Jeopardy." The event scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Brickyard Brewing Company. Not to be underestimated, two other teams with vast knowledge of Lewiston's culture and history will be looking to steal the crown from the former champs.

United Way of Buffalo & Erie County launched its 2023 giving campaign, "Find Your Way," with a press conference featuring United Way's President and CEO Trina Burruss, Board Chair the Rev. Rachelle Sat'chell Robinson, and United Way Chief Development Officer Rema Hanash. Together, they announced the 2023 annual campaign goal: $10 million.

But harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays are present year-round, and one study notes that children sustain a significant amount of sun exposure at school. About 23% of lifetime UV exposure occurs before the age of 18, and this exposure can have far-reaching effects.

The Western New York Land Conservancy has named Marisa Riggi as its new executive director, effective immediately. Riggi has been the Land Conservancy's conservation director since 2017, but she has also served as acting executive director since June.

No decision was made Monday on a proposal from Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours President John Kinney to install a new docking system on the south waterfront seawall adjacent to his company's staging area. Upon hearing from residents and boaters - and deciding it's time to review WJBT's existing contract - the Village of Lewiston Board, instead, opted to table.

Catholic Health announced Mark Sullivan has decided to step down as president and CEO on Aug. 31 after a 30-year career with the health system. Monsignor Robert E. Zapfel, chair of Catholic Health's Corporate Members and Sponsors Council, also announced the appointment of Joyce Markiewicz, the system's executive vice president and chief business development officer, to succeed Sullivan as president and CEO.
