One of the River Region's favorite fall festivals of the year will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, and Sunday, Sept. 27, along Center Street in the Village of Lewiston.

History was made Sunday night, at the end of the 58th annual Niagara County Peach Festival, as Lindsey Clark was named Peach Queen. She will receive a $4,000 college scholarship, courtesy of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club.

Earlier this week, the Peach Queen contestants paid a visit to Favorites Pizza, where Chuck and his staff treated each to a free "I Love Favorites" T-shirt and gift cards for pizza.

The 58th edition of the Niagara County (aka Lewiston Kiwanis) Peach Festival is this weekend, Sept. 11, 12 and 13, on the grounds of Academy Park in the Village of Lewiston. Times are 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Nearly 200 participated in the seventh annual Jonathon Cote Memorial Motorcycle Ride & Fundraiser, held in Erie and Niagara counties Aug. 2. It is presented each year in memory of Cote, a U.S. Army veteran. He served in Middle East conflicts in the early 2000s and returned as a contractor to Iraq only to be held captive and later killed in 2008.

The second annual Great Contraption Race, held last Saturday in the lower Niagara between Lewiston and Youngstown, may have been slow in its development over past months. But once under way, this unique race event held to benefit the educational and outreach programs of the It Happen to Alexa Foundation - much like the vessels mastering the river's waters - managed to overcome its growing pains quite well.

Friday marked a relatively quiet change at the top for the Lewiston Police Department. Chief Chris Salada finished his last day on the job and, at least for the time being, department operations will be maintained via seniority with LPD Sgt. Frank Previte expected to oversee day-to-day affairs until a replacement is officially named.
