Youngstown sculptor Susan Geissler has received a new commission of great significance for Grand Island. She has been chosen to create the statue of Medal of Honor recipient Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper, a World War II hero from Grand Island.

The Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation and Footprints on the Heart held a blessing of the grounds and dedication ceremony Wednesday at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston. Thanks to a donation by Catholic Charities, a community butterfly monument has been established for families dealing with the loss of a baby.

Old Fort Niagara will share American Revolution history with the public on Aug. 5-6, when it presents "Soldiers of the Revolution" from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. This re-enactment complements the daily summer programming currently happening at the fort, which features the British occupation of the fort from 1775-83.

Developer James Jerge intends to modify his 765 Fairchild Place development plan, which was previously accepted by the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees. He will present his modifications to the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals and Village Board of Trustees in coming weeks.

Rain can't stop Lewiston Smelt Festival

As the rain flowed Friday in the Village of Lewiston, crowds of people flooded into the tented area of the Smelt Festival. A light shower couldn't deter visitors from coming up to the waterfront and supporting the Niagara River Anglers Association. Under cover, they were quickly able to catch free (paper) boatloads of the tiny, fried fish, and listen to the sounds of 90 West.

In keeping with that idea this summer, Artpark & Company has announced a concert featuring two visually stunning outdoor spectacles: William Close & The Earth Harp Collective, and "Big Bang" by the French performance group Plasticiens Volants.
