The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston donated more than a dozen food packs to the village's Department of Public Works on Friday. Each kit included a can of soup or ravioli, a reusable bowl, oatmeal, pudding, water and, of course, peaches - all courtesy of Kiwanian Dean Beltrano. In addition, Kiwanian Jan Mathews dropped off a tray of cookies.

Lewiston Council on the Arts regretfully announces the cancelation of this year's summer events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Bug Fest," the "Summer of '69," the "Blue Monday" concert series and the Lewiston Art Festival and KeyBank Chalk Walk Competition will return in 2021.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees on Monday voted unanimously to restrict traffic on Ridge Street. The roadway is now a one-way street, with motorists entering via the Fourth Street corner and exiting onto Fifth Street.

Lewiston native, artist and entrepreneur Michael LaDuca recently created an online campaign to support local businesses. He raised funds through a GoFundMe initiative, where, for a $50 donation, people could purchase an 11-by-39 print of his famed Lewiston landscape watercolor photo.

Dozens of people were out and about in the Village of Lewiston enjoying the summer-like weather. They were walking down Center Street, eating on picnic tables and sitting on benches, looking at monuments, licking ice cream in Academy Park, and sprawled out on Water Street, looking out on the river. Many of those people were not wearing a mask or cloth face covering.

Everything about this year's Best Fish Fry contest was different - except the winner. For the third year in a row, Apple Granny Restaurant battered, I mean bested, the competition. The Village of Lewiston restaurant once again garnered the most votes (and the most voters) to take the title.

After seeing a post on Facebook about a donation to Mount St. Mary's from Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Californian Rosemary Miklitsch reached out to the Lewiston restaurant to match the previous donation of 250 meals. As it turns out, Rosemary grew up in Lewiston, and her grandfather, Dr. George Berry, was a doctor at MSM many years ago. Rosemary's parents also received care at Mount St. Mary's.

Personnel from Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1, Youngstown Fire Co., Tri Community Ambulance, Ransomville Fire Co., Cambria Fire Co., Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department held an "Appreciation Parade" Saturday evening for Mount St. Mary's health care workers. Lights were flashing with cheers and sirens sounding for hospital staff as the procession moved through the main parking lot as a sign of gratitude for those keeping the community safe and healthy.

On Wednesday, The Silo Restaurant owner Alan Hastings and GM Lexi Alfiere said, "We are eager to open for the 2020 season and have already started to assemble our team. We wish that we could take advantage of the great spring weather to begin our training, but will keep things on hold for a little while. We are watching the situation closely and anticipate a delayed opening."

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order extending limitations he placed on social gatherings to slow the spread of COVID-19. His mandate, "which closed or otherwise restricted public or private businesses or places of public accommodation, and which required postponement or cancellation of all nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations, games, meetings or other social events) ... shall be continued ... until 11:59 p.m. on April 29, 2020, unless later extended by a future executive order."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday said there's no immediate end date to social distancing or brick and mortar restrictions put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. Moreover, though he said there is likely a way to have businesses reopen as people are still taking precautionary measures, he acknowledged the coronavirus would still pose a public danger into the summer months.

Six local newsrooms in New York were selected to receive almost $30,000 in funding - CNY Latino, Examiner Media, Niagara Frontier Publications, Spotlight Newspapers, Wallkill Valley Publications Inc., and Watertown Daily Times, with each of these recipients getting $5,000. In this first round, 50 local newsrooms across the U.S. and Canada are receiving $5,000 grants to help cover unexpected costs associated with covering the crisis in their communities. Additional recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.

Niagara County Public Health Director Daniel J. Stapleton on Monday said the county has received three new positive test results from the New York State Department of Health. As of this morning, Niagara County now has 12 positive results, 64 people quarantined, 12 in isolation and still four pending test results from last week.

In the interest of public safety, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has severely curtailed the ways in which people can gather together. Restaurants and bars are limited to takeout and delivery; movie theaters, bowling alleys, shopping malls and hair salons are temporarily closed; events are cancelled; and nonessential businesses have to reduce workforce 100%.
