Lewiston Town Board members heard residents' comments on two pending applications before the town for projects above and below the hill at their Monday session. However, the board opted to table both measures due to a number of concerns heard from the public.

Talk about giving new meaning to the phrase "dog days of summer." Lewiston's Silo Restaurant and Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen are teaming to host a hot dog eating contest on Saturday, Sept. 3. Proceeds will benefit the Niagara County SPCA.

Nearly 100 reenactors and a nationally known historian will gather at Old Fort Niagara on Labor Day weekend to bring the War of 1812 to life. Richard V. Barbuto, who is both a retired Army lieutenant colonel and a Ph.D., will discuss the Battle of New Orleans at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

The Northwest Jazz Festival in Historic Lewiston, NY will take place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 26-27. It will be the event's first time back since the coronavirus pandemic halted activities in 2020-21.

Queen B's Cottage celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Aug. 12, with the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce. Owner Brooke Unversaw opened the new retail location in the former Lewiston Council of the Arts building. She previously had space inside The Country Doctor Antique & Gift Shop. Unversaw has curated a unique mix of home goods and gifts at the location at 475 Ridge St. (located directly behind the International Peace Garden).

Artpark & Company presents the return of Plasticiens Volants from Toulouse, France, for the North American premiere of "Leonardo." Modern Disposal Services recently teamed up Lt. James Lucas, Sheriff Michael Filicetti and the Niagara County underwater recovery team to support a new underwater metal detector unit for their division. The new device has advanced technology to make it easier for the underwater team to locate a variety of articles when needed in certain situations and difficult conditions.

Niagara County Department of Public Works Commissioner Garret Meal on Tuesday announced a section of Porter Center Road in the Town of Lewiston will be closed to all motorists, except local traffic, beginning Monday, Aug. 8. Electronic message boards are already in place warning motorists of the pending closure.

The New York Power Authority board of trustees on Tuesday approved the award of a competitively bid contract, valued up to $37,984,000, to REEL COH Inc. of Boisbriand, Canada, to fabricate, deliver and install a new gantry crane with a lifting capacity of 680 tons for the Power Authority's Niagara Power Project in Lewiston.
