Ashli Dreher, a special education teacher in the Lewiston-Porter Central School District, has been inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame. A teacher for 21 years, Dreher was honored Friday at a ceremony in the high school atrium.

A demolition crew is wasting no time tearing down the former Fairchild Manor Nursing Home site on Onondaga Street in Lewiston. An entire wing was removed on Monday, and enormous piles of metal, concrete, wood and brick were sorted and removed on Tuesday.

In the summer of 1979, artist Gene Davis (whose estate is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum) installed artwork at Artpark titled "Niagara '79." The artwork came to be known as "The Painted Parking Lot," and guests said it was "incredible."

Old Fort Niagara field musicians will participate in the Youngstown St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 18, starting at noon, in the village. The musicians will play the fifes and drums and wear, for the first time, the waistcoats sewn by Niagara University students during the fall 2016 semester.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced work has begun on a series of transformational enhancements at Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown. The work underway includes a brand-new, $2.7-million pool bathhouse and new boat docks for the 830,000-plus visitors who frequent the popular Niagara County state park every year.

On behalf of the Historical Association of Lewiston and its board of directors, happy birthday Sentinel! The Sentinel's first edition was issued Feb. 14, 1987, and actually had the title of "We Need A Name!" It was since that very first edition that the HAL started its long relationship with the Sentinel, when we placed our member meeting notice in it for a historian to speak about the history of Lundy's Lane.

On Tuesday, the Niagara River Greenway Host Communities Standing Committee unanimously approved a request for funding from the Town of Lewiston to complete the Mohawk Trail. The municipality will receive $13,958 for the project, which is expected to commence in 2018.

Coach Gary Raby Sr. goes by many names. No matter what you call him, though, you can't deny his heart of gold. He taught us so much in his life that sadly was cut too short last week while he was surrounded by his loving family at Hospice House. He will, however, continue to inspire us to believe in ourselves every day.

Joseph Cecconi, a native of Youngstown, competed on Team USA for the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Hockey Tournament in Montreal. He was one of 23 players from around the U.S. who competed, and brought home the gold by defeating Team Canada in a final 5-4 shootout victory on Jan. 5.
