Students break ground for new St. Peter's playground

The Lewiston Council on the Arts, which sponsors the festival, will continue its efforts to recycle at the event in partnership with Modern Recycling. To emphasize the theme of recycling and reuse, the Lewiston Public Library will offer a free hands-on art activity that will focus on creating art from discarded materials from noon to 4 p.m. each day.

Rain can't stop Lewiston Smelt Festival

As the rain flowed Friday in the Village of Lewiston, crowds of people flooded into the tented area of the Smelt Festival. A light shower couldn't deter visitors from coming up to the waterfront and supporting the Niagara River Anglers Association. Under cover, they were quickly able to catch free (paper) boatloads of the tiny, fried fish, and listen to the sounds of 90 West.

For over four decades, Artpark has been a unique destination for new and experimental statements of art, nature and performance. In keeping with that idea this summer, Artpark & Company has announced a concert featuring two visually stunning outdoor spectacles: William Close & The Earth Harp Collective, and "Big Bang" by the French performance group Plasticiens Volants. The show will conclude the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Deputy Treasurer Edward Walker had welcome news for the Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees on Monday. Thanks to an increase in property assessments, trustees can maintain the current tax rate - $7.38 per $1,000 of assessed valuation - and use less of the municipality's reserves.

A demolition crew is wasting no time tearing down the former Fairchild Manor Nursing Home site on Onondaga Street in Lewiston. An entire wing was removed on Monday, and enormous piles of metal, concrete, wood and brick were sorted and removed on Tuesday.

In the summer of 1979, artist Gene Davis (whose estate is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum) installed artwork at Artpark titled "Niagara '79." The artwork came to be known as "The Painted Parking Lot," and guests said it was "incredible."
