'Arctic: A Man Under the Ice' opens at Summit Park Mall site

A new event space at the former Summit Park Mall is hosting a wet and wild visual trip under a glacier. "Arctic: A Man Under the Ice," an interactive walking adventure featuring video immersion and physical exhibits, details the exploits of diver, filmmaker and photographer Mario Cyr as he and his team visit the Canadian arctic.

New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. Betty A. Rosa and members of the New York State Education Department made a visit to the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District, specifically to the Tuscarora Indian School. The goal of the stop was to meet with the members of the Tuscarora Council, tour the school, and inspect the beginning of school improvements that have started thanks to monies from New York state totaling $11.8 million.

DEC: Invasive aquatic plant hydrilla found in Niagara River

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, was found at two additional locations along the eastern shore of the Niagara River. The aquatic invasive was found and treated at a marina in North Tonawanda last year. This past summer, a hydrilla plant found by a boat steward during a routine inspection prompted another round of surveys along the Niagara River.
Higgins, Brown & Restaino announce federal funding for crime-fighting measures in Buffalo & Niagara Falls

Congressman Brian Higgins, along with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino, announced the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls have been awarded close to $300,000 in federal funding combined to be used toward public safety and crime prevention measures. The grants are provided through the U.S. Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.

In August, New York state released a tourism economics research study for 2021, detailing the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2021 reached $831 million, which is an increase of 9.3% relative to 2019. Traveler spend was heavily impacted in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but tourism spending surpassed prepandemic levels in 2021.

The Niagara County Legislature voted Tuesday to allocate up to $100,000 for the construction of a new Purple Heart monument on the grounds of the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport. The vote endorsed the recommendations of an ad hoc committee that was formed earlier this year to come up with a design and a location to honor Niagara County's Purple Heart recipients.
