Traffic concerns continued to dominate the conversation Tuesday, as residents and Town of Niagara elected officials butted heads over the proposed Amazon warehouse that could be a financial windfall for the town.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski welcomed a group of veterans to the Niagara County Courthouse on Tuesday to sign up for the county's "Thank A Vet" program and receive their photo I.D. card. This card entitles veterans to discounts on the purchase of goods and services at more than 500 participating businesses throughout Niagara County.

Andres says warehouse proposal should be approved

Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres, chairman of the county's Economic Development Committee, on Tuesday said the proposed site for the new warehouse project (of which Amazon is the potential tenant) was deemed shovel-ready by Empire State Development a decade ago and, as such, the project absolutely needs to be approved if the county wants to maintain credibility with national and international site selectors.

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh joined staff from the Niagara County Parks Department to plant a tree in Oppenheim Park to celebrate Arbor Day. The Parks Department will be planting more than 200 trees this season through a forest restoration grant that is part of the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The New York State Department of Transportation advised motorists the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard (U.S. Route 62) at Erie Avenue and Shawnee Road (State Route 425) in the City of North Tonawanda will be closed to traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, May 9. The closure is necessary to facilitate repairs to the railroad crossing by CSX, and is expected to last three days - weather permitting.

Niagara County Community College and Niagara Falls City Schools were part of the statewide "Women's Empowerment Draft" throughout the month of March. The two schools joined 24 other colleges and 30 grade schools to collectively celebrate Women's History Month. The program, created by Alfred University's Art Force 5, uses a pro-sports theme to build enthusiasm for historic icons.
