It is my intention to officially announce my candidacy for Town of Niagara supervisor. I am starting my campaign by reaching out to the residents, family and friends, as well as fellow leaders of our community, to ask for your endorsements and support.

It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing today that I will not seek a third term as supervisor for the Town of Niagara. I truly believe that everything and everyone has a shelf life, and it is time for me to "pass the baton" and spend more quality time with my family. I am very proud of our accomplishments over the past nine years, and I look forward to a new vision and new focus that the next town supervisor and board will have.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced 14 transformational projects in the City of North Tonawanda as part of the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award. Her team said the funding "will leverage the community's rich historic, cultural and natural resources."

Air transportation specialists, or port dawgs, of the 30th Aerial Port Squadron and loadmasters of the 301st Airlift Squadron loaded a firetruck and a portable water reserve tank onto a C-17 Globemaster III at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Dec. 9, to be donated to La Ciénaga, Dominican Republic.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, The Town of Niagara Lions Club, along with the Helping Hands and Town of Niagara Historian Peter Ames, will host a Wreaths Across America ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at the Witmer Road Cemetery. All are welcome to attend the gathering and remember the interred veterans.

On Tuesday, Empire State Development announced NOVAIR USA, a leading manufacturer of on-site gas production systems, plans to add 12 jobs and invest more than $1 million in its North Tonawanda plant. The investment will be used to expand operations and develop new products.

It's fall, and influenza (flu) season is here again. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The virus spreads mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The virus also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Flu can cause severe illness, hospitalization and death. Anyone can get the flu, and serious problems can occur at any age.

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, in partnership with the Town of Niagara, has completed a decade-long project to protect and restore a critical forested wetland site along Cayuga Creek in the Town of Niagara. The protection of an additional 12 acres in partnership with the Buffalo Niagara River Land Trust in September caps off restoration work on the creek and surrounding ecosystem.

New York State Commissioner of Education Dr. Betty A. Rosa and members of the New York State Education Department made a visit to the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District, specifically to the Tuscarora Indian School. The goal of the stop was to meet with the members of the Tuscarora Council, tour the school, and inspect the beginning of school improvements that have started thanks to monies from New York state totaling $11.8 million.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant, was found at two additional locations along the eastern shore of the Niagara River. The aquatic invasive was found and treated at a marina in North Tonawanda last year. This past summer, a hydrilla plant found by a boat steward during a routine inspection prompted another round of surveys along the Niagara River.

Congressman Brian Higgins, along with Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino, announced the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls have been awarded close to $300,000 in federal funding combined to be used toward public safety and crime prevention measures. The grants are provided through the U.S. Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.

In August, New York state released a tourism economics research study for 2021, detailing the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2021 reached $831 million, which is an increase of 9.3% relative to 2019. Traveler spend was heavily impacted in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but tourism spending surpassed prepandemic levels in 2021.
