Students from the Orleans and Niagara Career and Technical Education Centers recently spent a day at the IUOE Local 17 Headquarters in Lakeview to tour the 13th annual Western New York Construction Career Days.

Fourteen licensed practical nursing students graduated Oct. 8 from the Orleans/Niagara BOCES' Niagara Falls Workforce Development and Training Center. Orleans/Niagara BOCES Director of Career and Technical Education Joe Steinmetz and Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster made speeches and congratulated them on their achievement.

The Out of Darkness Walk in Lockport will start with registration at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Walkers start at 1:30 p.m. and will journey one of two paths: one path on the south side following the Erie Canal for one mile and back, and the other on the north side following the canal for two miles and back. Participants will meet at the Lockport Locks Pavilion.

The Career and Technical Education teachers at the Niagara and Orleans Career and Technical Education Centers depend on local industry leaders to help them design their course curriculum and provide internships for real-world experiences for students. These leaders sit on advisory committees and meet with teachers on a regular basis. Not only do they give up their free time, they often donate goods and machinery and offer valuable opportunities to the students in the Orleans/Niagara BOCES classes.

The Aquarium of Niagara has been ramping up its own piece of property to properly serve both locals and visitors alike. For the past few years, the aquarium has made big changes such as "Penguin Coast" in 2018 and "Aliens of the Sea" in 2019. On Sept. 27, it announced even more construction to create a new - interactive - habitat for some of nature's misunderstood children in the sea. It's called the "M&T Bank Shark & Ray Bay"

Kin Loch Farmstead is a sprawling, 37-acre plot on which Alex and Ryan Plante cultivated 2,000 lavender plants in 2018 and traded some growing space to Fran DePalma of Heirloom Soul Flowers. Since that time, the farm has outperformed expectations, receiving over 1,000 visitors during the summer who picked the freshly blooming lavender plants, take classes and experience country life.

The hardships of growing older affect many living within the Tribune's circulation. Some may need canes, walkers, wheelchairs; the nights may get longer, memories grow harder to access. Aches and pains from years of work may come to back to haunt the body, and of course, eyesight may become hindered.

The Niagara SPCA has a new program aimed at emptying its facilities. It seeks help from the community. Understandably, a lot of people can't help by adopting an animal, but the SPCA is hoping that community businesses and individuals would like to be the second best thing: the force behind finding each of these pets a home. It's called "Sponsor a Cage."

The talk of the residents in Town of Niagara on Friday was of a press release posted on the town's Facebook page. According to the release, the Electric Lights Parade is taking a year off from marching on Military Road. It will continue in 2020.

Another example was present Thursday night, as senior Matt Lysiak led the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team to a 26-6 victory over the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks.

Nobody knows this more than right here in Niagara County, where municipalities often end up competing with one another to draw in curious visitors and longtime residents alike for their own take of summer fun.

Carl Dixon, born and raised in Canada answered an ad for a band called Coney Hatch in 1979. He went on to tour around the world, rocked long hair and a killer voice, wrote hits like "Devil's Deck," "Hey Operator" and became the lead singer for the rock legend The Guess Who in 1997.

Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Broderick was given a citation from the Sanborn Area Historical Society at the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum Festival for providing the society help financing a feasibility study; purchasing the farm in 2002; continuing to support it over the years, including this year; completing the museum's parking lot and connecting the venue to the town sewers, allowing the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum to be open all year for the first time.

Alyssa Strangio, 11, is a sixth-grader at Edward Town Middle School and a Wheatfield resident. Alyssa's first pageant was when she was 5 years old, where she won the Peach Blossom in 2014 at the Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival.

The Henrietta G. Lewis Library on the campus of Niagara County Community College serves as a repository for Niagara County regional history, and thanks to a conservation/preservation discretionary grant from the New York State Library, artifacts from this collection will be better preserved with improved access. The $8,482 grant was one of eight of this nature awarded across the state.

Recently, Wheatfield Family Dentistry held an open house fundraiser for Make-A-Wish of Western New York. The firm offered free sandwiches and ice cream from an Anderson's food truck. Other events included free pony rides from Blaze's Pony Express and a jumbo inflatable slide donated by Entercom Communications from Pig Belly Entertainment.

From 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, the second Smiles for Owen fundraiser will be held. All proceeds from the event will benefit the SUDC Foundation to further support their mission to promote awareness, advocate for research, and support those affected by sudden unexpected or unexplained death in childhood.
