Hotel industry, reeling from COVID-19 economic fallout, lays out priorities for 'COVID 4.0'

As lawmakers consider additional legislation to address the ongoing health crisis and economic fallout from COVID-19, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) sent a letter to Congress calling for additional help in several areas, including extending the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) for severely impacted businesses and their employees, creating targeted lending facilities and liquidity measures to help hoteliers meet debt service, and passing tax reforms to benefit both hotel employees and employers. Together, these provisions would help ensure hotels can retain and rehire employees, protect employees and guests, keep hotel doors open, and incentivize Americans to travel again when it's safe.

SBA provided $20 billion to small businesses and nonprofits through economic injury disaster loan advance program

On Friday, the U.S. Small Business Administration announced the conclusion and success of the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Advance program, which provided U.S. small businesses, nonprofits and agricultural businesses a total of $20 billion in emergency funding. In order to assist the greatest number of small businesses, the EIDL Advance provided $1,000 per employee up to a maximum of $10,000.
Local public relations awards program moves to online format for 2020

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Buffalo Niagara Chapter announced its 31st Annual Excalibur Awards will shift to an online format for 2020. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for its first inaugural class this fall. The academy will be a part of SUNY Empire State College, where its programs were developed by faculty and staff. The mission of the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is to prepare women for executive and board positions, and to work with organizations across New York to improve their gender representation. The governor first proposed the creation of the academy in his State of the State agenda.
Survey: 70% of Americans support more economic stimulus to help reeling travel industry recover

The recently enacted Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Flexibility Act provides additional clarity and flexibility for small business owners to meet the requirements of the PPP loan program created by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. When the president signed the bipartisan legislation into law, it gave more time and discretion for when and how the loans can be spent to keep employees on payroll and keep up with accounts payable to further assist the nation's economy in its recovery from COVID-19 closures.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday signed legislation (S.8189/A.10270) banning price gouging of personal protective equipment. His office said, "During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been countless instances of egregious price gouging, particularly of critical medical supplies - such as masks and hand sanitizer - that are desperately needed by our hospitals and other health care facilities. This legislation will help ensure access to these critical supplies for health care workers and the general public."
ECMC elective surgeries resume

With the announcement earlier this week that all elective surgeries may resume in Western New York, ECMC has ramped up its surgical procedure protocols to accommodate the many elective surgeries that had been on hold since March 19, when New York state suspended elective surgeries due to the pandemic. Previously, ECMC had been approved on May 17 to resume outpatient elective surgeries.

The Western New York COVID-19 Community Response Fund, announced it has awarded nearly $1 million to an additional 47 nonprofit organizations, bringing the total grant amount from the fund to $6.6 million, supporting a total of 156 nonprofit organizations. This collaborative philanthropic effort was created in mid-March in response to the COVID-19 health crisis and has been coordinated by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Health Foundation for Western & Central New York, The John R.
