Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $5.01, up 14 cents from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.08. The New York state average is $5.04, up 13 cents since last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.11.

New York's tax break on gasoline went into effect on Wednesday, June 1. The state is suspending the sales and excise taxes on each gallon of gas, which equates to a total discount of 16 cents per gallon through the end of the year. DiNapoli: Local sales tax collections up 21% in first quarter of 2022

Local government sales tax collections grew by 21.1%, or $901 million, in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, according to a report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Collections for the three-month period totaled nearly $5.2 billion, with growth at least partially driven by inflation, which hit a 40-year-high in March.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.
