LW1 Operator, Niagara Refining receive NYPA economic development award

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced the New York Power Authority board of trustees approved economic development awards to three companies that will create 79 new jobs and spur nearly $46 million in capital investments. The NYPA board awarded two Erie County businesses with low-cost hydropower allocations - generated at NYPA's Niagara Power Project in Lewiston - and one St. Lawrence County business with funding through the Northern New York Power Proceeds program.
FTC approves final order requiring Price Chopper and Tops Market Corp. to sell 12 stores as a condition of merger

Following a public comment period, the Federal Trade Commission has approved a final order settling charges that the merger of New York-based supermarket operators The Golub Corp., which owns the Price Chopper chain, and Tops Market Corp. would likely be anticompetitive in 11 local markets across upstate New York and Vermont.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to spend the gift cards they received this holiday season in a timely fashion. If not, the money could eventually get turned over to the Office of Unclaimed Funds. In the past seven years, the amount returned to DiNapoli's office in unused gift cards has risen sharply from $5.8 million in 2014 to $16 million in 2021.

DiNapoli: Local sales tax collections up more than 17% in November

Statewide local sales tax collections grew by 17.5% in November compared to the same month in 2020, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced. Overall, local collections totaled almost $1.6 billion, up $235 million from November of last year. Collections for the month were also notably robust when compared to prepandemic levels, up 9.2% (or $133 million) from November of 2019.

Hochul: Minority and women-owned business enterprise utilization rate leads nation at 30.51%

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York state has surpassed its official utilization rate goal for minority-and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) on state contracts with 30.51% - the highest in the country - for the 2020-21 fiscal year. Additionally, more than $3 billion in state contracts were awarded to MWBE firms during the same time period, with more than $21 billion in state contracts awarded since 2011.

State legislation in place to protect credit & gift card holders

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed a package of legislation to protect consumers from exploitative credit and gift card practices in New York. Legislation S.133-B/A.5698-B protects credit card holders by creating a grace period for the use of reward points after the closing of an account. Legislation S.3467-B/A.4629-C prohibits fees and expiration dates on gift cards and gift certificates.
