New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the release of a proposal to "clarify and simplify" sportfishing regulations based on public feedback and DEC fisheries manager reviews of rules associated with the management of the state's fisheries. The proposed rulemaking also includes a limited number of waterbody-specific regulation changes to support improved management of these waters.

Members of the Niagara Wheatfield Falcons Unified basketball team participated in the Buffalo Polar Plunge fundraiser on Sunday at Woodlawn Beach State Park. The team raised $2,450 in just two weeks.

Ransomville Speedway honored its 2021 track champions Saturday night at the annual awards banquet at the Lewiston Fire Co. No. 2 firehall. Breakaway provided music for the evening, and Donna Eick catered the meal. Rick Mooney and Steven Petty served as the masters of ceremonies.

New York Power Authority fishing facilities, including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant, will close for the season, at dusk, Tuesday, Nov. 30. The fishing pier near the Upper Mountain Fire Co. at the Lewiston Reservoir and at the water intakes along the upper Niagara River will also close for the season.

The Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series will make its return to the Big R for the 37th edition of the Summer Nationals on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The 2022 edition of the Summer Nationals will be a 75-lap feature for "The Beasts of the Northeast." Thursday, Aug. 25, will be used as a rain date, if needed.

Opening day of regular season deer hunting is Nov. 20 in most areas of Western and Central New York. Hunting will stir the deer population, which is already active due to mating season. AAA is warning motorists to buckle up, be extra cautious on the roads, and scan for deer and other animals.

Recently, officials from the Niagara River Greenway Commission met with Town of Grand Island committee members who are working on its trails and bike routes. They took a bicycle ride down Grand Island Boulevard to finalize a direct route through town to officially connect the extensive Niagara River Shoreline Trail from Buffalo's Outer Harbor north to Youngstown.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced New York's fifth "Free Fishing Day" of the year is on Saturday, Sept. 25. It coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which is celebrated annually to promote outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and target shooting. New York provides anglers with six "Free Fishing Days" each year.

Multi-time track champion Chad Brachmann from Sanborn won his first Modified feature of the season as the PA Outlaw Modifieds made the trip to "The Big R."

Aaron Reutzel of Clute, Texas, won his fourth NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series A-main and took his first win at Ransomville Speedway on Friday night. Cameron Tuttle from Wilson won his second Investor's Service Sportsman feature of the season.

"Money" Mat Williamson from St. Catharines, Ontario, and Middleport's Derek Wagner won the Sid and Carol Jeffery Memorial events for the Krown Undercoating Modifieds and Investor's Service Sportsman respectively Friday night at the Ransomville Speedway. For Williamson, it was his third victory of the season at "The Big R." For Wagner, it was his second triumph of the season.

A new CDC report revealed bicycle-related deaths nationally increased between 2009 and 2018, primarily among adults. Males were three times more likely than females to end up in the hospital with traumatic brain injuries.
