The fall edition of Niagara-Wheatfield athletics has seen the calendar flip to October and with that means the postseason is near. Several teams will look to make big pushes to finish their seasons and continue in the playoffs.

Over the past week, the Niagara-Wheatfield golf team complete a perfect 15-0 regular season, which extends its winning streak to 83 matches.

Niagara University women's lacrosse assistant coach Alice Mercer, a member of the U.S. Women's National Team since 2015, is rejoining the national team to take part in the 2018 Team USA Fall Classic. The event will be held at U.S. Lacrosse headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 6.

After a 3-0 start to the season, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team was finally handed its first loss from Jamestown, Friday night. The Red Raiders defeated the Falcons, 26-14.

The Starpoint Spartans boys modified soccer team will play for a good cause this season as the team shows its support for the Ronald McDonald House of Buffalo. In its first game Monday, the Spartans wore the signature Ronald McDonald red and white socks.

Last fall, Falcons athletics accrued four Niagara Frontier League titles. As of now, this season's teams are on pace to do the same and then some.

Last season, the Niagara-Wheatfield boys soccer team won four games and lost two, but tied seven times. Every game seemed to wind up in a tie. In 2018, ties are turning into victories for the Falcons.

For the last three years, Niagara-Wheatfield girls swimming and diving has set up quite a history. After not winning a Niagara Frontier League title until 2015, the team started their own little legacy by clinching a share of the NFL titles in 2016 and 2017. For 2018, Falcons coach Mike Corsaro thinks title No. 4 could be in reach, too.

It wasn't the best start for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons football team Thursday night, but in the end, the team prevailed in its first road game of the season.
The Falcons rolled over the Hamburg Bulldogs, 35-12, Thursday night at Howe Field on the Hamburg High School campus.

On Saturday, before Niagara-Wheatfield's football game versus Frontier, the team and members of the Niagara-Wheatfield football family represented the Michael Ziegler "Heart of a Falcon" Scholarship award in the Out of the Darkness walk at Delaware Park in Buffalo.

This past week, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons fall athletic teams continued their ways. A couple teams also started up their seasons: the girls swimming and diving team, along with boys and girls cross country.

Niagara-Wheatfield High School's boys hockey team is known for its storied success on the ice, but now the girls will get their chance to show what they can do.
Last week, N-W announced it would join forces with Starpoint High School, as well as North Tonawanda High School, to form a girls hockey team. Lewiston-Porter High School is set to join come the 2019-20 season.

Niagara-Wheatfield girls volleyball coach Brandi Cochran experienced a whirlwind of a season last year. She raised her first sole Niagara Frontier League title, and then ventured off to the Section VI Class A championship for the first time in program history, where they were eventually defeated. Nevertheless, Cochran knows, even though last season was good, 2018 could be better.

On Thursday, Niagara-Wheatfield High School hosted their second college signing day of the year. Several student-athletes who made their college decision following the February signing were honored by N-W Athletic Director Matt McKenna. In all, five students signed in front of their peers, while one student was absent.

Baseball is a weird game where one day you can manage 10 runs as a team and the next day you get shutout. For the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons, they came into their Section VI Class AA semifinal battle versus No. 7 Williamsville North red-hot, winning their last nine games. Unfortunately, good things come to an end and the No. 3 Falcons were defeated by the Spartans, 3-2.

The Niagara Falls Wolverines baseball team rallied three times to tie up their quarterfinal playoff game versus Orchard Park, but in the end, it wasn't enough to get past the Quakers.
The Wolverines were defeated by the Quakers, 5-4, in nine innings in the Section VI Class AA quarterfinals.

When it comes to the postseason in high school sports, the motto everyone lives by is survive and advance. On Monday evening, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons softball team did exactly that.
The No. 3 seeded Falcons defeated the No. 6 seeded Frontier Falcons, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Class AA Section VI playoffs.

This past weekend, the NFL held its annual draft, selecting over 200 players from college programs across the nation. Lucas Gravelle's name wasn't called, but the Niagara-Wheatfield High School alum will still get a chance to play in the NFL.
Gravelle was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

It was a season many believed could be "the year" for the Niagara Falls Wolverines basketball team. The team compiled one of their best seasons in recent history and hopes were high. The hopes and dreams of the state tournament are now let to be "what if's?"
The Wolverines were defeated by the McQuaid Knights, 65-57, in the Far West Regional game at Buffalo State.

The Falcons defeated the North Rockland Raiders in the New York state semifinals, 4-0.

There are few schools who have a storied basketball program like the Niagara Falls Wolverines. On Saturday afternoon, the Wolverines added to that history, defeating the Williamsville North Spartans, 61-42, to win their third consecutive Section VI Class AA title.

The Niagara Falls Wolverines came into the Section VI Class AA playoffs as the favorite to win it all. On Thursday night, they were put to the test late, but survived a fight from the No. 4 seed Jamestown Red Raiders, winning 48-39.

Of all times for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons offense to get cold, the last place coach Gary Jackson wanted it to be was in the Section VI playoffs. Unfortunately, for the Falcons, points were hard to come by and they were defeated by the Jamestown Red Raiders, 48-39.

Trevor Book has been the anchor of the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks offense all season. Friday night versus West Seneca East he showed how he can take over a game at any time.
The Lumberjacks defeated the Trojans, 59-43, in the Section VI Class A-1 quarterfinals.

On Friday morning, eight Section VI hockey teams came together for an annual press conference. The conference was held to present the eight teams playing in the girls, small schools, large schools and private schools championships.

It's been the story all year for the Niagara-Wheatfield basketball team. The team competes and keeps the game close, but the opposition goes on a second half run to pull away. The story lived on Wednesday night and ended Niagara-Wheatfield's season, as the Frontier Falcons used a big 39-15 second half to pull away N-W.

The 2017-18 North Tonawanda Lumberjacks boys basketball team came into this year off one of their best seasons in program history. Coming off a sectional title, there were some unknowns as to how the team would perform this season. New faces surrounded the varsity squad, including 10th-grader Dante Moultrie.

Wednesday night, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks faced the Grand Island Vikings in the Niagara Frontier League's third place crossover game. The Lumberjacks got off to a hot start, but the Vikings continued to push their way back, falling just short.
North Tonawanda defeated Grand Island, 59-53, in front of a loud Vikings crowd.

Niagara-Wheatfield coach Erik O'Bryan will admit, his team has been close in almost every game, but a big run by the opposing team seems to always haunt the Falcons at the end.
That's exactly what happened Monday night, as the Falcons dropped a non-league contest versus Maryvale, 65-49.

Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof will tell anyone his team's ability to shoot the 3-pointer is critical. Wednesday night versus Niagara-Wheatfield, they only made six, a little below their season average, but all six came at key times to spark a Vikings win.
The Vikings defeated the Falcons 51-30 Wednesday night for their second win in a row.

For the third year in a row, the Battle of the Border brought talent from north of the border in Ontario to Niagara Falls High School to face off against some of the best that Western New York has to offer. Although only three Canadian teams played in this year's classic, the players from Canada represented their side of the border well, winning two of the three games. There were also some familiar faces from last year's battle who returned to the Wolvarena for another bought with an American high school. Here is a full recap from the action on Saturday.

Friday night's North Tonawanda-Niagara Falls matchup was a game that many people attending will never forget. Both teams provided non-stop, on the edge of your seat action that was thrilling until the final horn sounded.
Like every basketball game, their must be a winner and the Wolverines were the victors, 58-55 in overtime.

Niagara-Wheatfield and St. Joes played the most hyped up hockey game scheduled for Wednesday night, as the No. 6 ranked team in the state faced the No. 9 ranked team in the state, respectively. After 50 minutes of play, though, there was no winner and no loser.
The Falcons and Marauders tied, 1-1, Wednesday night at the Hockey Outlet. N-W and St. Joes came in as the second and third place teams in Division, respectively.
