The Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds will make their 36th visit to the Ransomville Speedway Wednesday night for the 37th running of the Summer Nationals. The race will be 75-laps in distance and will pay $7,500 to win. The Investor's Service Sportsman will join the Big Blocks as they will be competing in the second annual Mike Bonesky Memorial for the Western and Central Region.

The U.S. Coast Guard's latest 2021 Recreational Boating Statistics Report revealed boating safety improved with a 15.4% drop in the fatality rate per 100,000 registered vessels since 2020, while incidents decreased by 15.7% to 4,439; total fatalities decreased by 14.2% to 658; and total injuries decreased by 17.2% to 2,641.

The new disc golf course that opened at the beginning of summer in Royalton Ravine Park appears to be a huge hit with Niagara County residents, according to Niagara County Legislator Mike Hill. COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 and 2021 led consumers to seek safe, socially distanced family fun in a boat, and the rising tide of buyers lifted the U.S. recreational boating industry to historic sales levels. The resulting spike in first-time boat buyers and overall boating participation led to increased incidents, injuries and fatalities as per the latest U.S. Coast Guard data. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced a new state record for smallmouth bass was set June 15, opening day for bass harvest season. Thomas Russell Jr. of Albion reeled in an 8-pound, 6-ounce smallmouth bass from Cayuga Lake, Seneca County. Russell's bass surpassed the previous record by two ounces, a tie between fish caught on Lake Erie in 1995, and in the St. Lawrence River in 2016.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed a pay increase for state lifeguards to help address a staffing shortage at New York State Park beaches and pools, and Department of Environmental Conservation campgrounds and day use areas beaches. Starting pay rates for lifeguards at upstate facilities will increase 34%, from $14.95 per hour to $20 per hour, and 21% for lifeguards at downstate facilities, from $18.15 per hour to $22 per hour.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced new recreational saltwater fishing regulations for black sea bass and scup that take effect immediately in New York's marine and coastal district. These regulatory changes are necessary for New York state to remain in compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) by reducing recreational harvest of scup and black sea bass.
