On Saturday, July 23, the Niagara River Anglers Association held its annual Lower Niagara Bass Contest with Brendan Walsh, Niagara Falls, taking top honors with his two-fish total weight of 9.32 pounds. His largest weighed in at 4.74 pounds, and that was good enough to get the big fish of the day Lunker Award, topping all others.

It was a picture perfect night for racing last Friday at Ransomville Speedway. A total of 85 cars filled the pit area set for competition on Destino's Pizza & Pasta, Niagara Frontier Publications, and A-Verdi Storage Container night. The evening also played tribute to the late Harold Rinehart with the annual Poster Contest and Kids Ride event. Another great fan base filled the grandstands enjoying plenty of side-by-side racing action.

The Niagara River Greenway Commission is hosting its sixth annual Paddles Up Niagara event on Saturday, July 30, starting at 7 a.m. at Beaver Island State Park. The fourth annual Big Bass Classic IV, sponsored by Outdoors Niagara and A-1 Bait Supply, will be held on Saturday, July 16, from sun-up to 2 p.m. Boundaries are the lower Niagara River/Lake Ontario and tributaries. The $25 entry includes a $5 in the cash bash (the Lunker Award), which pays 100 percent of all money collected in the bash. Weigh-in, picnic and awards take place at the Lewiston Landing pavilion. Scales will be open from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. A total combined weight of two fish per person is allowed.

The Ransomville Speedway management welcomed in the month of July in successful fashion, as a packed house enjoyed plenty of hot racing action with 90 entries in the pit area last Friday night. At stake? Five large Gs as the second annual "Battle at the Border" took center stage. The second highest car count of the season provided plenty of racing action throughout the four divisions of Modifieds, Sportsman, Streetstocks and 4 Bangers.

The Niagara Falls Old Timers Sports Hall of Fame has changed its name to The Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame. The organization, formed in 1968, has inducted 250 members and is working on creating a new image. Coinciding with its new name is a new logo.

St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church and School of Sanborn celebrated "St. Peter's Night at the Ballpark" in conjunction with the Niagara Power baseball organization on June 11. The Niagara Power took on the Alleghany County Nitros at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls in front of a crowd of 370 people.

The Sports Medicine Department of Mount St. Mary's Hospital will offer a series of basic conditioning programs for high school age students starting July 6. Led by certified athletic trainers Jason Hopkins, ATC, and Brian Healy, ATC, the program will focus on endurance, speed, agility and injury prevention to assist athletes in grades 9-12 prepare for the fall 2011 season. The programs will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
