Hunting season is almost here, and the Firearms Permit Review Board of Wheatfield will hold its annual muzzleloader course from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Community Center located behind the Wheatfield Town Hall.

A total of 925 runners weathered cold, rainy conditions for a good cause as the first-ever Mighty Niagara Half Marathon to benefit Niagara Hospice took place Saturday morning along a course from Artpark in Lewiston to Porter on the Lake.

The Buffalo Museum of Science has partnered with the Buffalo Bills, Sabres, Bisons, Bandits and New Era Cap to create an interactive exhibit that investigates the science behind Buffalo's favorite sports.

"The Science of Sports" opens Sept. 29 and runs through Jan. 6, 2013.

Aside from being competitive, sports are a complex equation of physics, math and biology. From the physical impact of collisions to the technology behind how hockey ice is created, science plays an integral role in every highlight reel and play-by-play.

New York Farm Bureau offers scholarships

The New York Farm Bureau is encouraging area high school seniors who have been involved with agriculture and plan on continuing studies in this field to apply for the New York Farm Bureau Agricultural Youth Scholarship sponsored by the New York Farm Bureau Promotion and Education Committee. Scholarship awards are $1,500 for first place, $1,200 for second place and $1,000 for third place. The first-place winner will be invited to present his essay at a New York Farm Bureau spring event.

A total of 126 cars jammed the pit area last Saturday night, Sept. 15, for the annual King of the Hill event. While Mother Nature played the spoiler for the Friday night portion, bright blue skies greeted fans, drivers, and crew on Saturday as Investor's Services presented the King of the Hill twin 100s for the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman and Ki-Po Chevrolet Streetstocks, plus a full program of Parts Plus Stock Cars, Bobcat of Buffalo Fireballs, Gippster's Collision 4 Bangers, and a 4/6 cylinder enduro.

The Mighty Niagara Half Marathon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 9 a.m. in conjunction with the Hospice Dash 5K Walk/Run. The half marathon, which was added to the event in 2011 (and had a turnout of more than 1,000 participants), has been expanded this year. The event will include more live bands and music, a new website at www.mightyniagarahalfmarathon.com, and a new name.

Despite a 90 percent chance of rain, Ransomville Speedway was able to complete its 15th show of the 2012 season without a drop. Lucky? Perhaps. Suffice to say it was good to be at the Big R last Friday night (Aug. 10) despite the meteorologist's dismal forecast. Lesson to learn - don't listen to the weather "experts."
