Jacobs announces passage of law to protect school children from predators, abuse

New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs has announced passage of a law he co-sponsored that will provide greater protections for children by making it a criminal offense for a teacher or school employee to have a sexual relationship with a student under the age of 21.
Revitalized Niagara Power get first home win

After a two-year hiatus, the Niagara Power pulled off an 8-3 win against the Genesee Rapids at their home opener on Saturday, June 2. Starting pitcher Conrad Voss had seven strikeouts during the game, which remained tied 1-1 from the top of the third inning until the bottom of the sixth. That's when the Power scored five runs and finished off the victory.

Baseball is a weird game where one day you can manage 10 runs as a team and the next day you get shutout. For the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons, they came into their Section VI Class AA semifinal battle versus No. 7 Williamsville North red-hot, winning their last nine games. Unfortunately, good things come to an end and the No. 3 Falcons were defeated by the Spartans, 3-2.
Niagara Falls rally comes up short versus Orchard Park

The Niagara Falls Wolverines baseball team rallied three times to tie up their quarterfinal playoff game versus Orchard Park, but in the end, it wasn't enough to get past the Quakers. The Wolverines were defeated by the Quakers, 5-4, in nine innings in the Section VI Class AA quarterfinals.
Niagara-Wheatfield softball survives sectional test from Frontier

When it comes to the postseason in high school sports, the motto everyone lives by is survive and advance. On Monday evening, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons softball team did exactly that. The No. 3 seeded Falcons defeated the No. 6 seeded Frontier Falcons, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the Class AA Section VI playoffs.
WNY school districts awarded hundreds of Connect Kids to Parks grants

In advance of Kids to Parks Day, celebrated nationwide on May 19, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced more than 500 Connect Kids to Parks Field Trip Grants have been awarded to schools from Western New York, sending 32,000 school students on visits to public lands throughout the western regions of New York state, including Niagara, Erie, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua counties since September 2017.

Girl Scouts of Western New York has announced Camille Chambless of Buffalo as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Chambless' project, "The Give and Take Closet," provides donated clothes to those in need. The closet is run two to three days a week at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.

Great Lakes Research Consortium awards funding to 5 NY projects

The Great Lakes Research Consortium of 18 colleges and universities in New York has awarded $111,331.00 in grant funding for five projects that will address critical issues associated with pharmaceuticals, pollution and septic leaching; harmful algal bloom, and climate-related coastal resiliency. Research sites are located along Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Sodus Bay and the Wayne County shoreline, Owasco Lake and Skaneateles Lake.

This past weekend, the NFL held its annual draft, selecting over 200 players from college programs across the nation. Lucas Gravelle's name wasn't called, but the Niagara-Wheatfield High School alum will still get a chance to play in the NFL. Gravelle was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.
