At the June board meeting, William Ross was re-elected for a second term as the chairman of the Niagara County Community College board of trustees, with Vice Chairperson Gina Virtuoso and Secretary Bonnie Sloma being re-elected into their positions as well. Vincent Sandonato was elected as financial secretary for his first term.

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department's summer programming series recently began, with activities at the recreation center within the Red Brick Municipal Building (145 N. Fourth St.) as well as in Toohey Park (adjacent to the recreation center). The Recreation Department is offering many new programs as well as expanded summer hours. Included are sports, arts, crafts, a toddler program and health and fitness.

Cataract Youth Football and Cheer announced that registration for their 2018 campaign is now open and one can register (securely) online at www.cataractfootballandcheer.com or in person from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 - 3:30 p.m., Saturday, June 23 and Saturday, July 7 at Cataract's home field, 4455 Porter Road, Niagara Falls. Players and guests should enter the athletic complex from the Pine Avenue entrance.

Brake wins 2018 Women's Porter Cup

Friday evening at Niagara Falls Country Club, Brake, an Ohio State University graduate, finally reached the top and won the WPC.

Mariah Rice, a seventh-grader at Edward Town Middle School, has grown up being a helping hand to those in need. Along with her family, Rice has helped plant vegetables for a community garden and has participated in multiple holiday food drives and school supply drives. It doesn't end there. She also helped with an oil change event to provide free oil changes to those in need.
BOCES celebrates practical nursing graduates

Niagara-Wheatfield's Errick Road Elementary School began the 2017-18 school year by implementing a new school-wide framework for developing positive behavior called PBIS. PBIS stands for positive behavior interventions and support. PBIS is a statewide-recognized system geared toward teaching students proper behavior, and then rewards students and classes that demonstrate those desired behaviors.

Girl Scouts of Western New York recently announced Shavon Scive of North Tonawanda, as a 2018 Gold Award Girl Scout. Scive's project was titled Spreading Awareness Of Childhood Anxiety Disorders and Selective Mutism. Selective mutism is the inability for a child to communicate in social or school settings due to anxiety, but are able to speak where they feel comfortable.

Several student-athletes who made their college decision following the February signing were honored by N-W Athletic Director Matt McKenna. In all, five students signed in front of their peers, while one student was absent.

Nicholas Atallah plans to debate the chronology of the Cold War through information gathered in part from a summer trip to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Sophia Smith will compare baby boomers to millennials on both sides of the Canadian-American border. Jacobe Wendell recently returned from a conference in Boston that will contribute to his analysis of the creation and implementation of artificial intelligence.
