N-WHS hosting 'Race for Hope' track meet

The Falcons track team, along with the squad from Kenmore West, will host a "Race for Hope" track meet at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7 at Terry Harvey Field on the N-WHS campus.

In 2009, the Erie County Agricultural Society inaugurated its award-winning Erie County Fair Camp program with the goal to stimulate an interest in agriculture, a passion for learning and foster a love of the Erie County Fair. In the 11 years of its existence, more than 350 children and their parents have slept overnight in a barn, assisted with farm chores, showed animals in a livestock competition and worked inside a fair food concession.

Gonyea wins ADK scholarship

On April 13, Niagara-Wheatfield ADK held its annual Fashion Show. The fashions, modeled by ADK members, were provided by Talbots of the Fashion Outlets Mall. Proceeds from the event go to the annual scholarship for a Niagara-Wheatfield student.  This year, the scholarship was won by Olivia Gonyea. 
NCCC's Tylec a finalist for ATHENA Leadership Award

Professor Gail Tylec, director of the Faculty Resource Center for Academic Excellence at Niagara County Community College, has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the ATHENA Leadership Award in collaboration with the Buffalo Niagara Partnership.

Every game, the catcher is seeing a new style of pitcher, calling pitches from start to finish, helping guide the defense, throw base stealers out - oh, and they get to hit, too. As the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons baseball team comes into a 2019 season with high expectations, it is fortunate enough to have a backstop who has done all of that for quite some time: Ethan Guthrie.

As reported last week, the Board of Education has adopted its 2019-20 $48.487 million budget. Crafting the budget is an interesting process. While Lew-Port calculates its anticipated expenditures, it must proceed through budget development without solid numbers from New York on Lew-Port's state aid allocation (revenues).

On Thursday, March 27, Niagara-Wheatfield High School held a Summer Job Fair for students. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the high school's adult learning center, local employers visited Niagara-Wheatfield High School to conduct job interviews for more than 60 students.

The students and staff at the Niagara Academy had a successful fundraiser recently. The Orleans/Niagara's BOCES School had an egg sandwich sale in March and will use the proceeds to donate to charitable causes, pay for guest speakers and offset student costs for yearbooks and T-shirts.

Medaille heading to NCAA Tournament

While all eyes have been on the University at Buffalo's men's and women's hoops squads, Medaille College's women's bowling team earned the same title shot, claiming the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title on Sunday over Mount Aloysius College in a best-of-seven championship in the Pittsburgh suburb of Beaver Falls. What's particularly noteworthy is Medaille is a Division III school, and the other programs in the tournament are Division I.
Niagara University men's hockey season comes to close in conference finals

The Niagara University men's hockey team fell in overtime, 3-2, to AIC in the championship game of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs on Saturday night in HarborCenter. Picked to finish last in the conference in the preseason poll, the Purple Eagles earned the sixth seed in the playoffs and bowled confidently through Canisius, two-time defending champion Air Force, and RIT before the Yellow Jackets scored 1:16 into the extra period to end Niagara's season.

Former Niagara County spokesperson Christian Peck joins Medaille team

Christian W. Peck, who served as public information officer and chief spokesperson for Niagara County's government for the past decade, took on the newly created role at the 2,200-student college. He will become the primary contact for local non-sports media effective immediately.
