Just in time for the first week of the spring semester, Jasmaine West, a nursing student at Trocaire College, has received a refurbished car thanks to the generosity of Travelers and the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program. Through this collaboration, businesses representing all facets of the collision industry - insurers, auto repair shops, paint suppliers, parts vendors and others - partner to refurbish and donate vehicles to individuals and service organizations in need.

The Rotary Club of Niagara County Central annually donates dictionaries to third grade students in the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District. Rotarian, the late Joseph B. Emmons, began this project locally in 2006. His wife, Rotarian Marsha Emmons, proudly continues his worthwhile endeavor to bring these keepsakes of written knowledge to the students.

Lewiston-Porter's "One District, One Book" reveal was hosted online Friday by school librarians Mrs. Zielinski and Mrs. Cumminsky. More than 400 participated in the live telecast event. When it was all said and done, the children's book "Fenway and Hattie," by Victoria J. Coe, was declared the winner.

The executive committee of Section VI on Thursday voted to move wrestling to the spring sports season. The decision came after the health departments in the five counties that make up the section released a joint statement of concern.

For nearly two decades, the Lighthouse Free Medical Clinic (LFMC) has provided free medical and preventive care to uninsured and underinsured residents of Buffalo. Founded and managed by students from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, the nonprofit clinic continues to expand its services while adjusting to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, both in its operations and its fundraising activities.

Dr. Timothy Osberg, professor of psychology at Niagara University, has been a longtime advocate of spreading awareness of mental health issues on campus. So, when Niagara University's Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement hosted a workshop for individuals to become trained mental health first aid instructors as part of a larger effort to increase the mental health literacy of the Niagara County region, he decided to participate.

The Board of Education met this past Monday for a lengthy work session. The board began with a briefing on policy updates and review. The BOE policy committee, led by board member Anne Orr, meets monthly to review and recommend new state and federal additions and amendments. In addition, the policy committee reviews each section of the manual annually, to keep the policy manual up-to-date and relevant.

Niagara County Community College will begin the spring 2021 semester on Jan. 19 at both the Sanborn campus and Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. Most classes will operate virtually through Feb. 1 while a limited number of SUNY approved high-contact labs will take place in-person throughout the semester.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the results of New York's annual holiday toy, coat and school supply collections, which took place across the state over the past several weeks. Members of the governor's administration organized collections across the state and are distributing 7,348 toys, coats and school supplies to communities in need. For the first time, donations were also collected by mail to provide another option to participate amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

At a time when the pandemic has brought challenges for many in the academic realm, Niagara County Community College is improving access to higher education for high school students through the college acceleration program (CAP). CAP allows students to take college courses at their own high school, following NCCC curriculum. In essence, the dual-enrolled high school students are getting a head start on their college careers.

University at Buffalo leadership on Thursday announced the university's plans for the spring semester, which will mirror operations in the fall in that UB will follow a modified in-person format. That means courses will be delivered using a mix of in-person (and physically distanced) instruction, as well as remote learning.

An executive order approved Dec. 13 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo will waive the 90-day waiting period for pharmacists and pharmacy interns to administer COVID-19 vaccines after their approval, allowing pharmacists across the state to play a greater role in ending the pandemic, say University at Buffalo experts Karl Fiebelkorn and Christopher Daly, both in the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The Giving Project has teamed up with The Buildsters, a San Diego-based platform that is bringing construction into the digital age, to give away a Tesla as part of its Building Kindness campaign for Think Kindness. Proceeds from the national campaign will provide kindness assemblies, curriculum and programs in schools in an effort to decrease bullying and inspire kindness.
