DEC: Enforcement of New York's plastic bag ban to start Oct. 19

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced DEC will begin enforcement of the state's ban on single-use plastic carryout bags on Oct. 19. The plastic bag ban, which went into effect on March 1, was not enforced per an agreement between the parties in a lawsuit brought by Poly-Pak Industries Inc., et al, in New York State Supreme Court.

Cuomo announces results of impaired driving crackdown

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced law enforcement agencies throughout the state issued 3,262 tickets for impaired driving during the STOP-DWI "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, which ran from Aug. 19 through Sept. 7. During that time, officers also issued 116,292 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations, such as speeding and distracted driving.

Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the special enrollment period for uninsured New Yorkers will be extended through Dec. 31, 2020, as the state continues to provide supportive services during the COVID-19 public health crisis. New Yorkers can apply for coverage through NY State of Health, New York state's health insurance marketplace, or directly through insurers.

NYS Department of Labor: $300 lost wages assistance payments will begin

The New York State Department of Labor on Thursday announced payments for the Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program, which provides an additional $300 in weekly benefits to unemployed New Yorkers, will begin next week. Up to 2.4 million New Yorkers are eligible for the program, including 435,000 who must submit an additional certification to qualify.

WNY 'SWAT' team results

On Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the results of the state's "SWAT" team's focused testing effort in Western New York over the past five days. A total of 6,385 tests were performed at eight sites with results delivered in 15 minutes. A total of 266 positive cases were identified, for a positivity rate of 4.1%. Contact tracing efforts in partnership with local health departments are ongoing.
