Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Friday announced the New York State Department of Health is investigating several cases of severe illness in children and child deaths that may be related to COVID-19. There have been 73 reported cases in New York where children are experiencing symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock-like syndrome possibly due to COVID-19.

On Friday, Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz signed an emergency order to modify section 2511 of the Erie County Charter and extend the administration's deadline for completing a plan to close an anticipated budget deficit caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The order extends the deadline for completing a plan from seven days to 30 days and allows for potential, as-yet-unrealized federal assistance to be factored in.

The New York State Department of Labor on Friday announced a new initiative to proactively inform New Yorkers of the status of their unemployment benefit application to help them follow its progress. The effort, part of a broader campaign to proactively communicate with New Yorkers applying for unemployment benefits, will use emails and text messages to keep New Yorkers informed throughout the process - from submission to approval.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced more than $1.3 million in funding awarded to federally qualified health care clinics to expand COVID-19 testing capacity in Western New York. The supplemental funding was included in the Paycheck Protection Program and Health Care Enhancement Act, approved by the House of Representatives on April 23, which provided $25 billion to expand testing nationwide.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the members of New York's "Reimagine Education" advisory council - made up of educators, students, parents and education leaders - to help districts reimagine schools as they prepare to reopen while protecting health and safety, how virtual learning can bridge the gap, and supplement face to face education when schools reopen. The council - chaired by SUNY Empire State College President Jim Malatras - will be comprised of lower and higher education leaders from across the state.

Calling it the most dysfunctional and mismanaged aspect of New York state's response to the coronavirus pandemic, New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs is asking the Cuomo administration and the New York State Department of Labor to immediately commit all the necessary resources to fix what he called the "broken" unemployment system that still has not provided benefits to tens of thousands of New York residents who have been out of work since March.

On Wednesday, Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns submitted to the budget director of the County of Erie a request for CARES Act funding for foreclosure prevention and relief services resulting from COVID-19. Taking notice of the recent unemployment trends, Kearns said he expects Erie County residents to fall behind on their monthly mortgage payments. As such, foreclosure filings will be on a rise in the Erie County Clerk's Office.

Mr. Toasters, a pet cockatiel who lives at 483 Harrison Ave., Tonawanda got out of the house on April 27. His family followed him until the evening of April 30, when they lost sight of him. He is currently still lost.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Thursday announced the state's moratorium on COVID-related residential or commercial evictions will be extended for an additional 60 days, until Aug. 20. The governor also announced the state is banning late payments or fees for missed rent payments during the eviction moratorium, and allowing renters facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 to use their security deposit as payment and repay their security deposit over time.
