The Carnegie Art Center (CAC) announced the Carnegie Art Festival: A Virtual Art Experience as an alternative to in-person art festivals this summer. The virtual festival will be a website that will be released to the public on July 1 and will be on view until Aug. 1. The CAC is currently seeking artists and craftspeople to apply to participate in the virtual festival. Deadline to submit artwork is Saturday, May 30.

Independent Health is once again teaming up with the YMCA to offer free fitness classes this summer with "Fitness in the Parks: Home Edition!" The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston donated more than a dozen food packs to the village's Department of Public Works on Friday. Each kit included a can of soup or ravioli, a reusable bowl, oatmeal, pudding, water and, of course, peaches - all courtesy of Kiwanian Dean Beltrano. In addition, Kiwanian Jan Mathews dropped off a tray of cookies.

DEC recommendations incorporate guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York State Department of Health for reducing the spread of infectious diseases and encourage New Yorkers to recreate locally, practice physical distancing, show respect, and use common sense to protect themselves and others.

Empire State Development (ESD) and Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) on Friday detailed the $100 million "New York Forward" loan fund announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, aimed at providing working capital loans to small businesses focusing on MWBEs, small landlords and nonprofit organizations that did not receive funding from the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program and economic injury disaster loans. The fund will target those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including small businesses and nonprofit organizations with 20 or fewer employees, and small landlords who own small multifamily rental portfolios.

Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the launch of the $100 million "New York Forward" loan fund to provide flexible and affordable loans to help small businesses, focusing on minority and women-owned small businesses, that did not receive federal COVID-19 assistance. The state will take a smart, targeted approach for distributing these loans, focusing on businesses with 20 or fewer employees and less than $3 million in gross revenues. On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement that, beginning Tuesday, Western New York could officially enter phase one of the state's reopening plan. The announcement came after local officials said the area had fulfilled the final requirements for reopening. These required metrics dictated that the area needed to secure 521 contact tracers, and have hospitalizations and deaths fall (or at least remain low) over three days.

Plans involving a proposed solar energy facility on Lockport Road took a few steps forward at Wednesday night's Town of Niagara regular board meeting. The project first gained traction at last month's board meeting, after board members authorized Supervisor Lee Wallace to sign a non-binding letter of intent. The letter allowed solar energy firm Nexamp Inc. to begin a study for a proposed solar energy project at a former Niagara landfill property owned by the Town of Niagara and located at 4798 Lockport Road.

Pandemic-fueled "panic-buying" left store shelves lacking personal care items in late March. This effect carried over to nonprofits, including Pinnacle Community Services. Pinnacle's supporters have a history of providing many of these necessities, but donations were depleted at the onset of the pandemic.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins on Friday announced the New York State Legislature plans to convene session next week to pass legislation related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Committee meetings are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 26, with session scheduled for the days following.

A 10-day donation drive organized by Niagara University's Mission Committee and its Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement raised $2,700 to assist three community partners with local food efforts during COVID-19. Community Missions of the Niagara Frontier, the Magdalene Project of Niagara Falls and Heart, Love & Soul will each receive $900 to help as food costs rise and needs escalate as a result of the coronavirus.
