New York State Park Police partner with Niagara Falls Fire Department in Whirlpool State Park rescue

The PBA of New York State announced members from the New York State Park Police partnered with the Niagara Falls Fire Department on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 8, to rescue an injured hiker from the Vanderbilt Stairs area of Whirlpool State Park.
'Hamilton' tickets go on sale

Producer Jeffrey Seller, Shea's Performing Arts Center, and Albert Nocciolino recently announced that single tickets for "Hamilton" will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at www.sheas.org and in person at Shea's box office. Tickets will be available for performances running from Dec. 14, 2021 through Jan. 2, 2022.

Zucker to school districts: You're in control

On Thursday, New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker issued the following statement: "With the end of the state disaster emergency on June 25, 2021, school districts are reestablished as the controlling entity for schools. Schools and school districts should develop plans to open in-person in the fall as safely as possible, and I recommend following guidance from the CDC and local health departments."
ECDOH provides COVID-19 data update

The Erie County Department of Health is providing an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending July 31, ECDOH received reports for 535 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents; this is an 80% increase from the previous week's total of 297 cases, and a 10-fold increase in the past six weeks.
Niagara County to hold household hazardous waste collection in Lewiston

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh and Legislator Irene Myers are co-sponsoring a household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, Aug. 21, in conjunction with the Town of Lewiston, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, Assemblyman Angelo Morinello and the Niagara County Department of Public Works. The event is open to all Niagara County residents. An appointment is required.

Niagara University breaks ground on $11.5 million renovation for Kiernan Center

On Tuesday, Niagara University broke ground on its $11.5 million renovation project at the university's Kiernan Recreation Center. Project construction is scheduled to begin later this month, and the renovation is expected to be completed for the fall 2022 semester. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.3941/A.6040) expanding New York state's definition of telemarketing to include marketing by text message. New Yorkers have protection against unwanted robocalls under state law, but texting was not previously defined as telemarketing, exempting it from those protections.
