DEC to hold community meetings on community air monitoring initiative progress

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) on Wednesday announced four meetings to provide progress updates for communities participating in the 2022-23 statewide community air monitoring initiative.

Flynn announced the following on Wednesday: "Earlier this week, the Buffalo Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced the completion of their on-site investigation into the fire that occurred earlier this month at 745 Main St., which resulted in the tragic death of Buffalo firefighter Jason Arno."

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 23-year-old Saquan P. Young of Rochester pleaded guilty this afternoon before Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case to one count of criminal mischief in the third degree (class "E" felony) and two counts of assault in the third degree (class "A" misdemeanors).

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced more than $13.3 million has been awarded to help expand and preserve emergency and permanent supportive housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Funding was awarded to projects that will create 51 apartments in the Bronx and a new 80-bed emergency shelter for families in Erie County. Funding was also awarded to help make repairs to existing emergency shelters in Oneida and Chautauqua counties.

The Grand Island Central School District anticipates receiving $1.96 million in foundation aid for the 2023-24 school year, an increase of 14.7% over the 2022-23 school year, said Dr. Rubie Harris, assistant superintendent for school business and finance. Two programs that are anticipated to receive increases in state funding are the universal prekindergarten program and a new state program initiative called "high impact tutoring."
