Rain may move Memorial Day ceremony on Grand Island

Joseph A. Menter, recreation supervisor for the Town of Grand Island, reports that the weather forecast for Memorial Day may prompt the town to move the annual ceremony in DeGlopper Park to a new location.

He stressed that such dedicated volunteerism is much more than a passing fancy, but rather a lifetime commitment that cannot prevail without unconditional family support.

Councilwoman Beverly Kinney said from the very beginning she wanted the Grand Island Town Board to conduct a feasibility study on a proposal to build a new community center on the Island. She may get her wish at the next meeting of the Town Board.

Erie County summer youth employment program ready to hire

The Erie County Department of Social Services has announced the Buffalo Urban League ("BUL"), in partnership with Catholic Charities, has been awarded a contract to administer the county's summer youth employment program. SYEP provides income-eligible youth between the ages of 14 and 20 with paid summer employment for eight weeks (July 10 through Sept. 1). To be eligible, the youth must have a family income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level ($49,200 for a family of four).
