Town of Grand Island expresses opposition to Erie County's mask mandate

On Monday evening, the Grand Island Town Board passed by a 4-0 vote a resolution expressing opposition to Erie County's mask mandate, which went into effect Nov. 23. In the resolution, the councilmembers went on record as opposing any future mask mandates, vaccination mandates, or any other COVID-19 restrictions. It requested the town and the state refrain from enforcing the mask mandate on Grand Island.
First public menorah lighting celebration on Grand Island

Erie County DA advocates for changes to criminal justice legislation to protect public safety

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn, along with Buffalo Police Deputy Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia and New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, joined members of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police Inc., prosecutors, advocacy groups, and the family members of victims of violent crime to urge New York state legislators to modify recently enacted criminal justice reform laws. The announcement was held Thursday afternoon outside of the New York State Capitol building in Albany.
'Santa Land' canceled as precaution due to anticipated high-wind weather event

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, along with the Town of Orchard Park Recreation Department and other partners, announced the cancellation of "Santa Land" events due to a wide-impact wind and weather event that is expected to impact Erie County and Western New York Saturday into Sunday. The storm is expected to bring damaging and intensifying wind gusts and rain to the area throughout the day, with the potential for wind damage, downed trees and power outages.

Buffalo Botanical Gardens donates record amount fresh produce to a community in need

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens donated more than 700 pounds of fresh, organic produce to Gerard Place's Community Kitchen this year. After three years of partnership, the 100% community-funded, organic eco garden at the Botanical Gardens produced the biggest and most diverse harvest to date. This produce helped feed a community of people where the need was three times greater because of the pandemic.

Whitney not in favor of mask mandate

As town supervisor of the Town of Grand Island, I cannot place my support behind the mandatory mask mandate issued by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. Personally, I wear a mask where required and support vaccinations. However, I feel that the mandate will damage our businesses by forcing our residents to cross the bridge to Niagara County, where the mandate doesn't exist.
Higgins: $5.5 million-plus for health centers in WNY
