The 12th annual Paddles Up!, held on July 29 at Beaver Island State Park, was highlighted in the Waterkeeper Alliance's seventh annual Splash series of events. Waterkeepers Alliance is a grassroots organization that is comprised of 300 Waterkeeper organizations and affiliates.

Hersey Jr., members of the Erie County Fishery Advisory Board and various community partners gathered at the Niawanda Park Pavilion in the City of Tonawanda to announce recent updates made to the existing "Erie and Niagara Hotspot Fishing Map" online application, and to demonstrate the new features that will help identify additional fishing locations in Western New York.

Congressman Brian Higgins wrote a letter to the New York State Department of Transportation commissioner, urging the department to publicly release the schedule for the environmental impact study of the Buffalo Skyway and expedite the study to ensure the Department of Transportation makes appropriate choices in regard to how much money will be spent rehabilitating the Skyway.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has appointed William Geary Jr. as Erie County commissioner of the Department of Public Works. Geary, who had been serving as deputy commissioner of the Department in the Highways Division since October 2012, replaces Charles Sickler. Sickler had been serving as interim commissioner of the Public Works Department following the retirement of John Loffredo in January.

The Grand Island Lions Club on July 19 held its 59th annual Special Kids Picnic at the Buffalo Launch Club, an event that brought in over 1,100 kids with special needs and their chaperones. The kids got the opportunity to enjoy entertainment that included boat rides, pony rides, Shriner minikar rides, face painting and baton twirlers.

Three years ago at this time, Elizabeth Restey of Grand Island was in Roswell Park Cancer Institute undergoing her first round of chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia. Two years ago at this time, she was pregnant with her first child. This year, she is back at Roswell and pregnant at the same time.

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops announced that several local restaurants were named award winners in a variety of categories at the 34th annual food festival, including one from Grand Island. The judging took place by a panel of representatives from the local media, political, and business sectors.
