The Community Action Organization of WNY has launched a new text messaging service for clients in need called the "CAO text line." The tool was implemented to better serve the community and prepare for the reopening of its sites and services. Text alerts will include important announcements, program and event flyers, contact information, and links to CAO's website pages.

The July 4th Independence Day holiday has traditionally been the day Town of Grand Island residents celebrate the community like few others in this country. It is a holiday they truly enjoy by inviting family and friends for activities from early morning to late evening when a spectacular fireworks show would light up the sky over the Island and even cause travelers along Interstate 190 to pull over in awe of the colorful displays.

Bill Baldwin, a park entertainer for nearly 30 years who played Black Bart - among many roles - in the popular Western shows, proudly said he was shot and fell to the ground in Western Town 28,678 times during his Fantasy Island career. Upon hearing the park was closing, he contacted his friend, Jay Wilcox, a maintenance supervisor at the park for 20 years and now chief operating officer of Empire Adventures Inc. They began brainstorming about what it would take to bring the park back under local ownership and led by a team of former employees.

The Rotary Club of Grand Island's annual Shred-It event on June 27 was such a huge success members have scheduled another one on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to noon in the KeyBank parking lot in the Tops Plaza on Grand Island Boulevard.

Governors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut announced a travel advisory on June 25 that requires all individuals traveling from states with significant community transmission of COVID-19 to remain under quarantine for a period of 14 days. As of June 30, those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Ronnie Mansour had one word to describe his exuberance of the successful "Fuccillo Feeds the Front Lines" promotion being held this month: "HUUUGE," bellowed the general manager of Fuccillo Chevrolet on Grand Island in his best Billy Fuccillo Sr. voice. His team delivered enough meals from the Brick Oven Pizzeria & Pub to feed more than 100 members of the Island's police and fire departments on June 18.

Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns announced that, effective Wednesday, four Erie County auto bureau locations will be reopening to the public by appointment only. The facilities slated to reopen are the Southtowns Auto Bureau (located in the Southgate Plaza), the Northtowns Auto Bureau (located in the Sheridan Plaza), the Downtown Auto Bureau (located in the Rath Building) and the Cheektowaga Auto Bureau (located in the Urbandale Plaza).

Landowners looking to restock their warm/cool water ponds can place orders for largemouth bass and/or fathead minnows now through July 13 with the pick-up scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at the district office in East Aurora.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz on Thursday announced his 2020 COVID-19 budget deficit remediation plan, identifying budgetary gap-closing measures to address a projected $137.8 million pandemic-related deficit in the county's fiscal year 2020 budget. The plan identifies seven key measures, including usage of some fund balance and closeouts of some capital projects, to bridge the gap caused by significant losses in sales tax, hotel occupancy taxes, and other revenue generators since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

On Saturday, Erie County Medical Center Corp. celebrated the opening of the institution's new $55 million KeyBank Trauma and Emergency Department, which will double the size of the existing 40-year-old facility and feature state-of-the-art technology and equipment for the region's only level one adult trauma center.
