The Erie County "Back to Business" grant program has issued its final report on the program's accomplishments, showing a total of 1,399 Erie County small businesses receiving approximately $19.2 million in direct financial assistance from the U.S. CARES Act through a partnership between Erie County and 43 North.

Three local organizations will receive a total of $1.8 million in year-end COVID-19 relief funding ("CRF") after Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz directed the county Division of Budget and Management to reach out to local institutions known to be in acute fiscal distress due to the COVID-19 pandemic to determine if remaining CRF could be used to assist them.

During the first quarter of the new year, the Town of Grand Island's Planning Board and Town Board will be asked to review plans and vote on a 1.1-million-square-foot, 45-foot-high warehouse along the New York State Thruway I-190, which some are calling "the largest facility ever built on the Island." At the same time, the group that spoke out against the Amazon project has reemerged in opposition of this project.

The Fuccillo Chevrolet, Toyota and Hyundai dealerships of Grand Island on Dec. 23 donated $1,500 to the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation to support the work of helping neighbors in need in the community. The family of dealerships on Alvin Road recognizes through its charitable donation that Island families face hardships year-round, not just during the holidays.

The Junior League of Buffalo will award two $2,000 scholarships to graduating female high school seniors who are outstanding leaders in the Western New York community. The scholarships are for post-high school institutions to assist the student in defraying expenses for tuition, books, fees or dormitory. They are awarded based on evidence of demonstrated leadership skills within their school and community. Additionally, the student's background should show strong evidence of being well rounded in both personal and academic endeavors.

The Buffalo Zoo has teamed up with Zoo Atlanta (Georgia) and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (Ohio) to form a new gorilla troop located at Zoo Atlanta. Amari, the 10-year western lowland gorilla, born at the Buffalo Zoo in 2010, recently traveled with the Zoo Atlanta animal care team from Buffalo to Atlanta.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced the majority of the office's staff will not report in-person for work effective Thursday. The Erie County District Attorney's Office made the decision, in consultation with Erie County and its Department of Health, in an effort to reduce the number of employees inside the buildings and prevent the spread of COVID-19. More than 75% of the DA's office employees will be permitted to work from home through the end of the year.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced the House of Representatives approved the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA). The Island Dispatch has learned Michael Huntress, vice president of Acquest Development LLC of Amherst, submitted a site plan to the Town of Grand Island for a proposed 1,080,308-square-foot distribution facility project on Long Road. The structure would sit on land its own, along the New York State Thruway I-190 - an area that was under consideration by Amazon for a proposed 3.8 million-square-foot distribution center.
