Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and Sisters of Charity Hospital have become the first hospitals in Western New York to offer what they called "next-generation technology" for dialysis care called the Tablo Hemodialysis System. The changeover to the new dialysis program within Catholic Health is aimed at improving the patient experience, while reducing the cost and complexity historically associated with dialysis treatment.

DEC proposes regulation allowing counties to opt out of holiday deer hunt

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the release of a proposed regulation that, if adopted, would allow counties to opt out of the recently established end-of-year deer hunt, slated to occur annually between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. The "holiday hunt" is an extension of the late bow and muzzleloader deer season in New York's southern zone.

Remembering 9/11 on Grand Island

Grand Island Post 1346 American Legion is remembering the tragedy of 9/11 this weekend by holding a Patriot Day poppy drive in memory of the lives that were lost 20 years ago. The poppy drive will be a daylong event on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. Donations are being accepted to purchase poppies that will help all local veterans, said Post Judge Advocate Joe Synakowski, who designed and produced this poster.

The Erie County Department of Health is providing an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending Sept. 4, 2021, ECDOH received reports for 1,326 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents, a 22% increase from the previous week.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, Erie County will join 60 communities across the country to memorialize those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, in a special ceremony hosted by the Erie County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, the Erie County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the WNY Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial, and Explore & More - The Ralph C Wilson, Jr. Children's Museum. The ceremony will take place rain or shine at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park at 8:30 a.m.

Spectrum Health marks International Overdose Awareness Day

Spectrum Health and Human Services says, "The statistics are startling. Here in Erie County, there was a 57% increase in confirmed opioid-related overdose deaths from 2019 to 2020. Nationally, there was a 30% increase. The trajectory for 2021 is not any better: As of July 14, there were 85 confirmed opioid-related deaths, and as many as 75 more once full toxicology reports are reviewed. While tragic, death from overdose is also preventable with education and intervention."
ECDOH: 'Steady increase in new COVID cases continues'

The Erie County Department of Health on Tuesday provided an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending Aug. 21, ECDOH received reports for 983 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents. With a 20% increase from the previous week's total of 811, a steady increase in new COVID-19 cases continues.
