On Wednesday, New York State Sen. Sean Ryan and Assembly member Karen McMahon presented Daniel E. Barry Jr. with a resolution passed unanimously by the New York State Legislature, honoring him on the occasion of his retirement from the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo Inc. after a career of 58 years.

The Erie County Agricultural Society announced an initiative to help combat childhood hunger in the area. In a partnership with Tops Friendly Markets and Student Transportation of America, a "Meals On The Bus" food drive is planned for three area Tops Markets locations from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24. Proceeds will benefit FeedMore WNY.

The Niagara Region of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has announced a second public information meeting to review the landscape plan along the West River Greenway Trail on Grand Island. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Golden Age Center, 3278 Whitehaven Road. A presentation about the landscape plan will begin promptly and be followed by discussion.

The Erie County Department of Health will be set up two community sites in Buffalo on Saturday, July 10, to provide COVID-19 vaccinations. These clinics will offer single-dose Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine for ages 18 and older, and the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine series for youth ages 12-17.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz released his 2021 State of the County address, for the first time ever using a videotaped release to highlight Erie County's multifaceted response to the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss both completed county operations from 2020 and plans for the future. Poloncarz, who did not present a State of the County address in 2020 while Erie County confronted the pandemic, devoted much of the 2021 address to praising the lifesaving work of local health care heroes throughout the public health crisis.

A positive declaration was issued calling for Acquest to prepare a supplemental draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on its proposed 1.1-million-square-foot distribution facility at 2780 Long Road. The town voted to redesignate itself as lead agency for review of a revised version of the project. The site is where Amazon had wanted to build a similar facility until it withdrew last August.

The Lown Hospital Index has developed the first ranking to examine the racial inclusivity of over 3,200 hospitals in the country to assess their success at serving the people of color living in their communities.

The 20th annual Capen Garden Walk will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, July 17-18, rain or shine. This is a free self-guided tour of about 60 private gardens and carefully nurtured public spaces in the neighborhoods surrounding the University at Buffalo South Campus. In addition, some of the private gardens will be open for "Capen by Night" from 8-10 p.m. Saturday, July 17.

The Western New York Land Conservancy has purchased a 44-acre forest on Love Road on Grand Island from the Buffalo Ornithological Society. The purchase was funded by the Greenway Ecological Standing Committee and was supported by the Niagara River Greenway Commission.

In April 2020, the Albright-Knox's Public Art Initiative asked 16 local artists to respond to the initial lockdown requirements of the pandemic. To build community spirit, the museum sent artmaking materials to these artists at their home studios, and they worked to produce a 16-piece collaborative mural. The piece, now located at 43 W. Chippewa St., "speaks to individual and collective experiences of the pandemic."
