Poloncarz statement on passage of 2021 Erie County budget

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz issued the following statement Thursday pursuant to the Erie County Legislature's 7-4 vote to approve the administration's proposed 2021 budget, which funds ongoing county COVID-19 response and also reduces the county property tax rate to $4.43 per $1,000 of assessed value, the lowest it has been since 2005:

The 2020 holiday light display contest, presented by the Grand Island Recreation Department, is going on now. The contest is open to all Grand Island residents. The deadline for submission is Wednesday, Dec. 16. Awards will be provided for the top three winners in each of two categories: classic and contemporary.

The Island Dispatch has learned Michael Huntress, vice president of Acquest Development LLC of Amherst, submitted a site plan to the Town of Grand Island for a proposed 1,080,308-square-foot distribution facility project on Long Road. The structure would sit on land its own, along the New York State Thruway I-190 - an area that was under consideration by Amazon for a proposed 3.8 million-square-foot distribution center.

The New York State Department of State on Tuesday announced the completion of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) project for Scenic Woods-Bicentennial Park in the Town of Grand Island. The completion of the nearly $600,000 project, which was funded in part with a $197,634 EPF LWRP grant, is helping to transform the town's waterfront into a vibrant destination with public spaces and amenities for residents and visitors.

Hope arises for bettering the boulevard

When the first South Grand Island Bridge was constructed in 1935, connecting Tonawanda with Niagara Falls, the New York State Thruway Highway 190 did not exist. Travelers heading north used Grand Island Boulevard as its primary thoroughfare, according to Supervisor John C. Whitney. That is why the former bustling Niagara Falls Visitor Center was built at the corner of Grand Island Boulevard and Staley Road - and why there are so many motels along the boulevard.
