An exhibit of vintage furs is in store for visitors to Grand Island Historical Society's Sept. 18 open house at River Lea in Beaver Island State Park. Hours for the open house are 1-4 p.m. Costumed docents will be available to give visitors a tour of the historic farmhouse.

Hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church, 2100 Whitehaven Road, the ladies of WOW will examine the Old Testament book of Isaiah and also Christ BC. The Premier Celebration is 9:30 a.m. Sept. 15.

Al Prame likes vehicles. A retired truck driver, Prame has enjoyed building cars for many years. On Aug. 18, Prame brought a 1931 Ford Model A that he had built in the past few years to the car show that was part of "Rockin' the Grounds" at St. Stephen R.C. Church and school, 2100 Baseline Road.

As summer draws to a close, the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) is reminding residents about ways to reduce mosquito populations in their neighborhood and how to prevent mosquito bites. The reason? West Nile virus, one of many arboviruses that can infect humans and cause serious disease, has been detected in mosquitoes collected in recent surveillance pool testing within Erie County.

On Aug. 12, children and adults gathered at a tent next to the Grand Island Memorial Library to celebrate the end of the summer reading programs with ice cream and with crafts, and with drawings for prizes. They also had the opportunity to talk to Marissa Ries and James Peterson from Spectrum Health about a program called NY Project Hope that provides information, education, emotional support, and links to resources.

Jim and Mary Pinckney both experienced the challenge of living with a spouse who had dementia. Jim's first wife, Elaine, was diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia at the age of 60. Seven years later, she passed away. Mary's first husband, Larry, passed away at 72 after a long bout with Alzheimer's.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $500,000 awarded to the Erie County Department of Health. Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and awarded through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the grant will provide training for first responders on Narcan use and overdose recognition.

Terry and Dori Klaaren were exploring Morocco after having traveled through Europe for approximately eight months. They were a young couple in the early 1970s, and Dori had suggested the trip, explaining that it would be a good time to do it " 'Because we're free; because we've got no careers. We have no kids, no debts. We will never be this free again for the rest of our lives. We need to travel,' " Terry said to a group at the Grand Island Memorial Library, where he spoke about Dori's artwork on Aug. 1.
